    Hi,
Im on a learner permit and I'm just wondering if i'm insured on a car, does my accompanying driver have to be insured on the same car, or are there any other requirements for them insurance wise?

Legally, not that I am aware of.

However, accompanied drivers are there to give support and guidance, but they are there also to take over the driving if the learner gets overwhelmed, is approaching a motorway, etc. - it might not be practical to have an accompanied driver who isn't insured to drive your car.

Your insurance company will still give you thirdy party in the case of an accident.

Generally this is correct. But read your policy as not all of them are created equal.

It depends on the company. I know with Aviva, and their Accompanied Driving Cover Policy (where you get 6 months cover free with 10 lessons) if you drive without an accompanied driver you are not insured - they sent a very clear letter to highlight this point.

AFAIK, if you're accompanying driver has their own policy on their own car (I know not all fully licenced drivers have their own cars, but a lot do) then their policy probably covers them to drive any car. Make sure to check this though, just in case!

    Folks,

Just to clarify on this whole accompanied driver business - can the learner driver have accompanied cover on their own car, or must they be learning to drive in the full license holders car, e.g their parent?

I know this is probably quite straightforward but just checking!

They CAN drive their own car, with their own insurance, with the fully licenced driver.
