Yeah, saw that earlier. Was kinda interested until I saw it was a Rover transplant. Thought it was gonna be something a little more exciting than that.

So whats the deal with the engine? Any advantages? What power output?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 66,401 ✭✭✭✭unkel

    Pathetic :D

Why did someone do that?

That old Rover lump puts out about 180BHP.

    The seller is lying too:
Other advantages are Cheap road tax (1986)

    The motor tax is €1,566

If you want an '86 Porsche with a proper Porsche V8 engine, I reckon a 928 S2 / S4 with 310/320 BHP wouldn't cost you much more than that ;)

It's advertised in Down, different motor tax system.

Indeed. But even in UK tax terms, the car qualifies for the highest tax rate for a pre 01/03/2001 car - at GBP205 (which is even higher than post 01/03/2001 band I - one of the most polluting bands). Calling it cheap tax is hardly the case even from a UK point of view

Also donedeal is an Irish site and the asking price is in EUR, not GBP. Perhaps my term of "lying" was too strong, I do apologise. Slightly misleading it is at least though :D

No mention of having to VRT the car either for someone living in this island where they pay for stuff in EUR :D

For an '86 Porsche wreck it would be €720 - for a decent nick 924 or 928 it would be more like €2,000-€3,000 and much more again for a 911 (although I've never heard about one of the latter variety with a V8 engine :D)

To be fair, it's been on pistonheads for months - I think he just put it on donedeal in a last ditch attempt to drum up interest, rather than deliberately marketing it down here

I was quite excited about it until I found out it was the weedy rover v8.

Aye here it is on pistonheads. The current ad is a "premium advert" and only 5 days old.

In fairness it is road legal with a full MOT, you never know it might find a crazy buyer, but I suspect the car is worthless. Worth no more (or even less - where's the engine?) than a similar car sold for parts.

Nothing wrong with the Rover V8, damn sight better than alot of engines of its era.

Better sound of a V8 and some VW 4-pot shíte.

Nope, nothing wrong with it. V8s are my favourite engines anyway :D

Sticking a Rover V8 into a Porsche is a bit like sticking a Honda 50 moped engine into say a Ford Escort though isn't it? ;)

Maybe it can be boosted to claw its way back into acceptable BHP land?
