The end of the road for Chamney ?

I've been a follower of Tom Chamney's blog since 2008. It's a great read for anyone interested in the thoughts and training techniques required to be Ireland's 3rd and 11th fastest man over 800 and 1500 metres respectively. I don't know the man at all but I was bitterly disappointed for him in Barcelona as I honestly thought he would be a finalist and if everything went right o the night he could have scraped a medal.

Anyway things didn't go his way, he got sick at the worst possible time and crashed out in the semis (having ran a good tactical race up to 1400 he just ran out of steam). Seems the criticsm he received has got to him and he's thinking of calling it a day. I personally hope he doesn't.

I sincerly hope he keeps going. He ran a 1500 pb this year and i think has a 3.34 in him. That's enough to make it worthwhile.

He's also a character and the sport needs them. The middle distance viewpoint looks very bleak with Chamney removed.

Has to be a windup. Trying to remember what Kiernan said as I watched it and while the usual negative it wasn't massively over the top and I doubt a professional athlete would be forced into retirement by it.

Hope so. I'm more a Campbell man meself but we need the Chamneys in the sport also.

The comments about Jerry's words having an effect on him are presumably tongue in cheek but the retirement thoughts are very real. Both his parents have posted comments.

To be honest, some of the stuff Jerry says deserves a thread of it's own. Chamney makes a good point about the possible sponsorship effect of the complete s***e he spouts on RTE that is done purely to stroke his ego.

The rivalry between them is good in particular. Even more so because they don't like each other!!

    Unbelievable.
We all have bad days where we swear 'Never again' - I hope a few days/weeks rest will have him itching to get back out there again.
This would be a drastic loss to Irish Athletics.

Really hope he doesn't pack it in, Great club runner and does give it his all, Shows up for Road relays and Inter Clubs too . Irish Athletics would be worse off if he did quit.
