Suicide

Ok i am going to preface this thread by explaining that this is not a joke and i am looking for various opinions on this.

Myself and a friend were talking about suicide (we are both catholic but his faith isn't as strong as it used to be) and the consequences of throwing away God's gift. He believes that this is (in his view) the same as eating meat on a Friday not being a huge sin anymore. He believes that you will still ascend to heaven if you take your own life.

I on the other hand am unsure, and when i told him of this he asked me a hypothetical question. What if you were attempting suicide and at the very last moment before death regretted your decision and did not want to die however it had gone too far to save yourself. Would this still be a sin because you had committed the act or would your genuine change of heart be seen as a saving grace?

As i said this is a genuine question and i welcome any opinions you have :)

Are you looking for general Christian responses or just denomination specific i.e., Catholic only?

    Similar threads here and here.

Wow apologies, FC i had not thought of searching for this topic (not so much suicide but the hypothetical situation part) as it was just a discussion between me and a friend. I might pop this question on one of the threads you suggested instead so delete this sure

    Many thanks :)

No worries. I'll lock this thread in that case.
