    Hi,

any ideas what might be the cause:

I was driving to work this morning and for some reason, car seemed to loose lot of power. The car did not go anywhere, actually I had 2 gear on and 30mph and I had to use almost whole throttle to keep the car going.

After about 1 minute driving like that, the problem went away and car was normal again.

When I parked the car to work, it was ok, but I think the idle sound is different than it was before, it sounds much more like diesel engine than before.

    Car is Volvo s40, 2l petrol, 1998.

Now the car is even worse, and sounds like petrol Subaru,

I can drive the car, but it does not take much revs and the engine vibrates really badly. I think it also burns petrol in the exhaust.

Stop driving the car and get it checked. You are only doing more damage

I have stopped driving the car. I did test it now tough, no problems when engine is cold, but when the temp goes to 80 degrees, problem starts again. So no point to drive before I find out what might be the problem.

    Itarumma.

Could be a number of things but I`d put money that its either the throttle body on the way out or if its a GDI then its coked up.

Easy enough fix--take the throttle body off and clean it with a good quality carb cleaner.Or stick a couple of bottles of red-ex injection cleaner in the tank--It just might do the job for you without having to strip it down. But it will eventually need to be stripped down and cleaned completely or else replaced.

it is a non-gdi engine, and I have cleaned the throttle body maybe 6 months ago, but

of course I need to check that again to make sure and clean all the (electric) connections to maf etc.

Now I just have to find out what cleaner to buy for this purpose.

    Car works now,

a little bit of oil was over the engine, that oil then leaked to sparkplug and eventually under the lead, that connects the sparkplug to ignition coil.

Therefore the oil prevented the spark and car was running on three cylinders.

Was gonna say check the coil/spark plug leads when you said
    "sounds like petrol Subaru" :D

Glad it was such an easy fix.
