Hi everyone, I have a couple of weeks off work coming up and would love to head away, problem being for various reasons....work, recession , etc. none of my friends are in a position to come with me but I'd still love to get away. Just thinking about headin somewhere for a week or ten days, preferably somewhere warm. Anyway couple of questions, first of all do ye think I'm mad heading off on my own (thinking I'd enjoy it but haven't went on hols on my own before so am afraid I'll actually hate it! :)) The other question was does anyone know any travel companies/groups that cater for people going on hols on their own, when its so short. Thanks in advance for replies :)

Hi, i don't think its a strange thing to want to go on hols on your own, especially if your comfortable with your own company (which some people aren't). I would probably recommend a city break as it will keep you occupied more than a "week in the sun", but again thats up to your own tastes.
As for travel companies that offer one person vacations im not sure of any but theres bound to be a few if you google it.
Just wondering if your male or female? Enjoy your trip!

Thanks, D.R. Adams. I'm female, btw. Yeah a city break might be a better option alright. thanks again

Hey OP. I was meant to be going away by myself a couple of weeks ago, but had to cancel it due to lack of funds. :(

Anyway, if it's in your budget, check out TrekAmerica. They specialise in solo travel-they have small groups on the trips, usually no more than 13 in them- and do trips from 3 nights to about a month all accoss America. They've a Facebook page too, so you can find people you'll be away with.

That's who i was meant to be going with. It's a bit expensive though, but i hope to be able to do it myself next year instead!
Some people thought i was a bit mad when i'd booked it, but i think i would've enjoyed it. Personally i think on a holiday where you've a load of things to do all day will give you less time to feel alone rather than if you were sitting on a beach all day.
Hope you find somewhere nice and have a ball!

I went away alone recently and it was one of the nicest holidays ive ever had. now it was a bit easier for me cause the place i was going i knew people that i could meet up with a bit, but i spent 2/3 days alone and it was great. get up when you want, do what you want, eat when/where you want. Theres usually always someone around in a similar position and willing to chat. Its given me the confidence to travel a bit more alone. Im thinking of doing it again in a few weeks :)

    Go for it :)

I went to South America for a couple of weeks with Trialfinders. I found them pretty great. You generally get put in a tour group of about 8-10 people and travel around to the various sites that are in the palce you're going to. It's great fun, you have time to spend on your own if you want, but hanging out with new people can be a lot of fun too.

Trailfinders, as I said, were great and tailored the trip to what I want. It was expensive enough, but not crazy.

And it was my first trip on my own, and to be honest, although I was apprehensive at first, I loved every minute of it.

Hi OP, check out www.gapadventures.com and www.intrepidtravel.com - i'm heading off on one of GAPs trips in Asia shortly and will be solo - previously did an Interpid trip in Africa and also on my own - best holiday of my life and met so many great people - go for it!!

    Hey OP,

I've gone on many holidays alone and to be honest, they are the best holidays I've ever had. I love going somewhere with friends but you dont get the full chance to meet new people and do exactly what you want.

I'm American and I did a one month trip around Ireland on my own and met so many amazing people along the way! Great experience all around, well worth it and I think you'd love it if you did a trip alone :D

I once went to Paris on my own and loved it. I was there for a week and just did what I wanted, when I wanted. You can also meet lots of people when you go on tours or things like that. You should spend time on your own and a holiday is a good place to start. Bring a book or a diary too. It's so easy to meet people when abroad!

I don't think you're mad. Go for it. Just be careful about which cities you visit.
Stay in a reputable hotel in the commercial or centre of the city so you are not alone on the outskirts of the place.
I went away for a week alone to Paris and loved it, although there were evenings when I really wanted to have a natter with friends and they weren't there.
You can do all the touristy stuff but there comes a time in the day when I really wanted that friendly voice to chat with.
I also spent a week in west Cork and Kerry and enjoyed it immensely. In fact, I would recommend that part of the country because you meet locals and foreigners.
