The rumors were it was supposed to increase in July but better late than never.

Are you NBS or a different plan?

Its ok for gameming when it works, but it can be a bit ''moody'' sometimes a be as slow as diahorea sliding down a letterbox

Somebody working for 3 told me it's 25GB for customers covered by the NBS, 15GB cap otherwise. He was trying to sell it though. Also told me it would be '40Meg speeds by the end of 2012', to which I asked 'for each user in a sector?' The answer went along the lines of 'no, but 1.6 Megs minimum is always guaranteed' -- again, something I'd take with a grain of salt to be honest, particularly if it gets oversubscribed. Probably something I shouldn't have asked in the first place! The way I figure though, the words 'guarantee' & 'mobile "broadband"' just don't mix! ;)

This site should provide details on who is covered by NBS and who isn't:

I hope my plan has been upgraded to 25 GB because I had to pay 70 euro extra last month cos I went way over the usage limit.

I still have my original 15gb allowance. Maybe it'll increase next billing period?

    According to http://www.three.ie/nbs/ ...

    Highlights
    • Only €19.99 per month.
    • A massive 25GB usage allowance.
    • You don't need a landline.
    • With 95% population coverage, we're Ireland's largest high speed network.
    • Because it's mobile, you can use 3 Broadband on the move.
    • Free technical support.

    • Technical Support is in India
    • You can't reliably use it for VOIP
    • The latency is totally unstable and unsuited to Gaming
    • It's not always on*
    • It will randomly disconnect and lose all your sessions*
    • It may not connect at all, it's a Wireless Dial-up on the Mobile Phone Network*
    • It's an "up to" Speed, not a Package Speed, so actual speed can be 0.05Mbps to 3Mbps
    • Voice (regular handset calls) has priority and capacity is shared with them.
    • The only contention control is coarse via Cap as it's Mobile.
    • We call it Broadband, but no official statistics of EU or OECD do. It's Midband.

3's NBS contract with Government sets:
    • A fixed maximum contention
    • Always on
    • Latency < 120ms
    • Speed > 1.2Mbps

None of these parameters can be guaranteed by 3G/iHSPA.

Funny thing is the Government NBS must be able to fine 3 if they don't adhere to these specs, which are surely impossible for any mobile network to commit to? (unless lots of users disappeared, or many more masts appeared). The potential fines must just be small change for a company like 3 to have contended for the contract in the first place. Just seems like a waste of taxpayers money to have funded 'broadband' initiatives this way.

The Government wouldn't tell me what penalty clause there is. Or how exactly Analysis Mason will audit it. That's secret.

I suspect the penalty is that they don't get the subsidy for that particular mast if more than NNN people complain.

Three was obligated under their 3G licence to do this size roll out ANYWAY! So they get some subsidy to do what they were going to do and maybe put some masts in a few place that they might not have.

    It's primarily a phone network.

Wonder have many had their data allowance in NBS areas upgraded yet.confused.gif
Suppose i'll know in two weeks if mine is.
15 gb seems too disappear fairly quickly even without downloading too much.

How do you know if you're on NBS or not?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,445 ✭✭✭✭watty

If it's an NBS area you should demand an NBS contract.
