Theory Test in a week

So I booked my theory test like a week ago and I'm doing it in a week. I started studying today, would have started earlier but my internet is just back up today and I haven't been able to get to town for the CD-ROM.

So far, I have done this test three times

    http://www.ism.ie/index.php?page=mock_theory_test

I got 32/40, 29/40 and 38/40. I don't really know how good that test is though? Should I still get the disk tomorrow?

I downloaded a 'Rules Of The Road' PDF so I don't have to buy that, although I can't see myself reading through that too boring for me :p I think the disk would suit me better. I might use it though for learning road signs and things like that.

I need to pass before they bring in all these new laws because then I won't be able to afford to get driving. Do you think it is possible for me to be prepared in such a short space of time?

Best advice is to get / borrow the CD from someone and keep doing it until you're blue in the face. I started studying 3 days before hand, not that I'm advocating it, but I spent a whole heap of time doing the test again, and again. When I passed it, I did it some more.

    Best of luck :p

I did this last week, and got 38/40. Now I've being on a motorbike for the past two years so just borrowed a book from someone and read over. Most of it is common sense so just go over the road signs and stoping distances.

Also don't be a fool, always follow the 2 second rule!

There are some other mock exams you can take.

80% of the questions are common sense that you should be able to answer already. Just learn off the rest of the answers that require specific values/numbers. This is what I did (I got 40/40).

Don't bother with the CR-ROM, just get the theory test book (not the rules of the road book).

Ok so I got a never opened disk free off someone, thing is it is like four years old and didn't they change like 10% of the questions since then? I have a friend who I can get the brand new disk off in a few days too, is there any need to? Or will this one do? I'll practice on this one anyway for now.

I find that a lot of it is down to luck. The first time I did the test, last year, i failed it. I got a whole heap of very awkward questions (rare signs, stopping distances in different weather, bizarre situations and a bus question).

Second time I did it (last Tuesday) I passed with 38/40. I got mostly common sense questions.

I just did that exam and passed, but I still got two wrong... an interesting pair...

Question: What vehicles are exempt from the minimum legal tyre thread depth set for standard cars?
Correct Answer: Motorcycles and Vintage cars..
    Your Answer: Tractors. → Incorrect

I don't believe any car or bike is allowed have bald tyres

    -And-

Question: You have been involved in an accident and a person is unconscious. You should
Correct Answer: try to stop the bleeding by applying a tight bandage.
Your Answer: lie the person flat on the ground and keep him / her still. → Incorrect

No mention of a wound here, just that the person is unconscious, so why would I be looking to stop the non-existent bleeding...?

I'd get the most recent theory test book or CD-Rom and study it thoroughly. Even if you are capable of scraping a pass in the theory test through luck or common sense, if you're going to start driving, you're going to need to know what's in that book and apply it to your driving every day!

Ya I got the old disk but the only questions that are catching me now are the ones like ''What is the stopping distance of a car travelling _ m.p.h on a dry road'' those kind of ones. I'm guessing it isn't m.p.h any more right? So I'm not learning those and when I get all those wrong I sometimes still do pass using the disk. I got 36/40 just now, got everything right except those.

When I get the new disk off my friend I will learn those kinds of questions.

It's all km/h now - and there aren't that many stopping distances questions. I went to the effort of learning them all off, dry and wet, but none of them came up in my actual theory test :P

All of the questions bar one that came up in my theory test I have seen before on the CD - I got 39/40! The one I got wrong is that full beam headlights shine at a point 100m away, but I said 120m.

I'm going to be taking the theory test soon then hopefully the full test,
I've passed all the mock tests on the CD i have. What i mostly would like to know from a fully qualified driver is,i'm in Galway, how long did it take from passing your FULL driving test to receiving your licence?

I'm going to try and get the new disk off my friend as soon as I can, for now I'm just kind of practising off the old disk. I'm hoping I'll pass it! A week today!

Here's a hint: the longest answer is almost always the correct one :D

The best thing you can do is buy the cd, it's really worth the money you can get it here for 21.80 http://www.omahonys.ie/catalog/official-driver-theory-test-cdrom-4th-ed-p-227155.html. Go through all 800 or so questions in the question book section (which is on the cd) so you know the answers then do as many mock tests as you can fit in before the exam. There's no point doing just tests as they don't cover every question you could be asked unless you do about a hundred and it's better to be a least familiar with all the questions on the day of your actual theory test.

Hope this helps and good luck!! :)

I did mine today and got 37/40,i studied the disc the last few days and only managed to pass 1 out of the 6 or 7 practice tests i did on the disc, maybe i was just lucky?

I just got the disk off my friend yesterday, and uh oh! The questions are sooo hard :( Only got 26/40 on a mock test, so screwed and the test is Wednesday :(

Just go through the question book so you can learn the answers to the questions. If you go through that even just once you'll find the mock tests are a lot easier to do. :) Also with every mock test you do you should go back over the questions you got wrong and learn the right answer so then if you get the question again you'll get it right. This is expecially true with questions on maximum speed, number of allowed passengers, max weight of vehicle for b category which you can't just answer with common sense you have to just know them. And don't worry about wednesday you'll do fine just keep practicing!!
    Good luck :D

Ok all is not lost, I just did a lot of revision and now got 34/40 and last test 37/40.

Fantastic! You should be fine in the real thing if you keep practicing! You will probably be amazed how many of the questions in the real thing that you have seen before - it is exactly like doing it on the computer.

Have past the last two I did again, got like 38/40 on both so I'm going to do like 5 more today, 5 more tomorrow and 5 on Wednesday before I go for the test plus do the revision thingy and hopefully be enough. My sister has not started studying at all, she is doing it the same day and won't be home till Tuesday, don't know what she will do lol!

My friend told me today you can only answer two questions incorrectly, it's 5 right?

Yep, you can get 5 wrong and still pass. Must get at least 35/40 to pass. I wouldn't worry, it's not rocket science!

Just take your time when you get in there and you'll be grand. And remember some questions have two answers. Also when you're finished and you have time left don't get up and leave go over your answers and make sure you're absolutely happy with them. My son and his girlfriend did theirs yesterday and both passed so they're delighted but he's not getting his hands on my car lol :D

Hi I was just wondering could anybody offer a bit of help? I got the recent theory test book (May 09 edition) and it's divided into colour sections, I am just looking to drive a car, does that mean I only have to study the green and blue sections? I took some prep tests online and there was questions on motorcycles on it. Will they be in the real thing?

Also with these new rules coming in, If I take the test beofre they come in will I be exempt from having to undergo their new proposals?

    Thanks for any help,

In last three tests got 39/40, 36/40, 36/40 so the disk says I am ready for tomorrow, going to try and do like two more tomorrow before I go as well.

You should be fine! Best of luck

Don't rush through it. A lot of the questions look very similar, and may even use the same picture and have similar choices, but are not exactly the same. Be careful not to rush and give an answer that you think is right because you have seen a similar question before - read the question, read all the possible answers, decide which sounds more plausible and then read the question again to make sure it fits! There is a time limit, but I sincerely doubt you will need all of it, even if you take your time.

Best of luck! Remember you can flag a question and come back to it later to change it.

Well done! I'm sure it's such a relief to have it over and done with.

Best of luck with the actual driving now!

I had the same result last year and got the exact same question wrong :D
