If he says you need a new motherboard, then that's what you need I suppose.

What tests were done? This could be a simple charger problem or a faulty battery.

THE battery could be simply dead, you can buy new one on ebay or here
http://www.laptopparts.ie/index.php?categoryid=19& ,does it work ok, when the battery is removed.

a laptop should work without the battery if the mains is plugged in so rule out the battery. Is the charger getting hot after its been plugged in for while? Is there an indicator LED on the charger to show its working. Can you test it on a friends acer laptop or get an electrician to test it.

Remember sales staff get a much bigger commission on selling you a new laptop rather then a replacement charger.

try a different charger but make sure its the same voltage.

as for the mother board. well my mate got scammed and got charger 180 for a new mother board and they never changed the mother board all they went near was the power supply.

the guy in click store plugged laptop in to mains without battery and using a universal charger, no lights came on and it did not charge. I had recently purchased a new charger lead from amazon as I thought it was the lead that was faulty, I plugged the new lead into the mains (battery was in laptop) and it charged fine, then after a day or so the 3 lights (power & led light) were flashing and no charge. So I removed battery and tried plugging it in directly to the mains..... Nothing happened.

I got told the motherboard rubbish before as well. I went home and fiddled around with the power socket connection and fixed it mself in half an hour. Worth having a look at, you won't do any worse damage.

my wife's laptop - an aldi one, donno what type or anything - stopped working one day, i bought another power adapter from powercity cos i thought it was that, I could see it was charging the battery & the laptop worked for a day or so, then died.

She rang Alpha in Bray (they've done work on her laptop before & it was ok) guy told her straigth away (over the phone) it was the motherboard & that they don't do any hardware repairs but for €69 they'd send it to their partners in Blanchardstown for assessment & they might even attempt a repair but it would probl need a new board at a cost of around €300 + labour + €69 she'd have already paid :eek::eek:

My wife's friend told her to ring Bray Computer Centre, she did & they offered to look at it if she broght it in, they diagnosed the power connector on the motherboard needed replacing, they fixed it & did a full service on the laptop for €90!! :D it's been working happily ever since & that's two months ago.... so not all places are the same, shop around....
