    When it comes to the UK and it's culture Brian Friel sums it up for me in Translations;

    "...I’m afraid we’re not familiar with your literature, Lieutenant. We feel closer to the warm mediterranean. We tend to overlook your island."

    I have to say, that is my experience also in this neck of the woods.

    I lecture in a third level college and pretty much every single student has a Blackberry.

    Sounds about as well-founded an opinion-as-fact piece as this "report" from last year: http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2009/jul/13/twitter-teenage-media-habits

    Guess the Guardian needs silly-season filler as much as the rest.

    Don't think they're too far off the Twitter and Teens thing, though I don't have any Irish stats.

    Somehow I find it hard to believe Irish teens are staying in every night i droves to tweet political commentary about Vincent Browne's show. SMS would be way ahead.

    My own observations from TCD, UCD, DIT, DBS, Portobello, etc are that blackberries are to be found for sure, but the iPhone is prevalent too.

    I must go along to the Jeannie Johnson and see what they're all using!

    Would be interested in seeing the results of an actual survey alright - the absence of any quantitative data in these regular media pronouncements is shockingly poor. If the "BlackBerry has become teenagers' smartphone of choice", what are the stats? How do sales figures compare to last year? etc etc

    This nonsense goes on all the time in Irish media outlets also, especially with regards discussions on copyright infringement. It's taken as a given that student downloads all their media, therefore €x million is lost every year, or "I see a lot of white earphones around so therefore Apple monopolize the MP3 player market." Grrr. It pushed me into doing a survey on piracy & digital media habits in NUIG this year, though the analysis stage is still ongoing.

    BlackBerrys seem to be much cheaper in the UK, regularly see them for free or little more on reasonably priced contracts with t-mobile and the likes.

    With regard to Ireland, the vast majority of young people would still use 100 phones on payg due to pricing and the free meteor calls and texts offer

    I'd say you're right, the non-BB and iPhone segment is the largest.

    I'm using a nokia e63 at the moment and it does me fine for mobile internet / skype / instant messaging etc, just don't see the need as a student to spend 3/4 times the amount on an iphone
