How are your coloured belts organised?

    Hi

I've been following the " Quickest BB" and "How are you graded" forums and it got me thinking about this one. There are so many arts/systems/styles represented here it would be interesting to hear how the belts are divvied out in the different ones.
In the system of Kenpo (Parker System) I am in it goes; White, Yellow, Orange, Purple, Blue, Green, 3rd Brown, 2nd Brown, 1st Brown and 1st Black. The Dan grades or Degrees as we call them go from 1st to 10th with your Degree rank shown on your belt ( although some BB's elect not to wear their rank).
Looking forward to hearing how other systems organise theirs and if they wear other colours instead of Black or for their higher ranks!

    Regards
    Darren

I'm in Oyama Karate [currently on Summer break :( ] The gradings go like:

    White
    White w Blue Stripe
Blue [just tested for White, White w Blue and Blue this past June]
    Blue w Yellow Stripe
    Yellow
    Orange
    Green
    Green w Brown Stripe
    Brown
    Brown w Black Stripe
    Black

For Green and up I will have to go to Poland to test for them.

I am a ( proud :) ) holder of a Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do. Also a Blue Belt in BJJ. Just thought I'd post the Irish belt list from BJJ. As you can see, John Kavanagh is the only person from Ireland to attain a BB. He is training 10 years plus, been a European champion and runs a gym professionally. My point being to show just how hard it is to get any belt, never mind a BB in BJJ. Awesome .

But how come he's not on the list on bjj.ie there's a few non Irish guys on there. Had a quick look at their website says he's still teaching there he's just out of the country for a few weeks.

    Middle Kyu's - Blue & Brown.

Dan grades 1 - 10. Highest ranked in Ireland is 6th Dan.

Then for juniors(-16 yrs) its different, they're graded on a longer scale.

    Juniors grades are called "mons".

    1st to 3rd mon - White belt
    4th to 6th mon - Yellow belt
    7th to 9th mon - Orange Belt
    10th to 12th mon - Green belt
    13th to 15th mon - Blue belt
    16th to 18th mon - Brown belt

You have to grade once for each mon, except with your very first grading when most are double graded. Also, once the player is transitioning from Junior to senior they will have to grade to the equivalent senior grade, eg, If a somebody was a 10th mon and they turned 16, they would have to grade for their 6th Kyu before progressing to their 5th Kyu.

Well done on your TKD blackbelt.

Any chance you can get back on topic now and answer the OP's question. Its really simple - how are your coloured belts organised..

And in case you wondered, I deleted your first post too.

My post was on topic. Also, a quick explanatory message would surely just be good manners.

Good manner's, yes it would. If I wasn't so busy deleting crap after crap on this forum.

Seriously, its gone to the ridiculous now (not from you of course) the amount of idiotic, off topic and down right disrespectful posts the mod's are deleting on an almost daily basis.

And its been noted & commented upon to us both here on IRL.

Its gone to the stage now where we're now having to look at the forum's charter to tighten things up here or we run the real risk of losing the place!.

And I understand that a lot of guys don't like the idea that their posts have been moderated, or even the thoughts that there's moderators about is enough to piss off a few, and we bear that in mind whenever something's to be done.

So yes Tim, I whole heartly agree that a note to you would be nice but its just gone stupid now and I really don't have the time.

Another thing, I often post rubbish replies on other forum's on boards.ie which are deleted, but with a little hindsight I know that the post was off topic, or unhelpful etc & deserved to be deleted.

We've to make this a level playing field for all, and everyone deserved to at least have their threads treated with a little respect - again Tim this is in no way aimed at you, its across the board.

As far as I know the BJJ.ie list hasn't been upgraded in a while, so he's probably not on it because they haven't put him on it :) Andre from Morcegao isn't on as a brown either and there's a few purples missing.

    No conspiracy then

Hope this isn't too off-topic Makikomi just wanted to explain this -

Up until yesterday essentially we only had one person, the webmaster, getting all emails re: new clubs and promotions. Our webmaster, who is a seriously smart and talented guy, has spent the last year doing his MEng in Comp Sci and about a week after he graduated went to work for an IT firm in Belfast. So he just really hasn't had the time to do it, but no one else was getting these emails - so a few things fell threw the cracks. Having said that there are also a lot of promotions we simply don't get notified about.

As Barry said, no big conspiracy - for example Cesar Morcegao is on the list because he emailed us and provided us with the info to check him out. Whereas Andre has never done this and no one has done it on his behalf. The idea of the list is that, if you want to check if someone's X belt, and they're on the list, they've been checked out and are definitely that rank. Not being on the list doesn't mean you're not legit - we're not omniscient - it just means no one's told us about your rank. Make sense? Having said that I would like to get to the stage where it's normal practise for clubs to send us lists of promotions and it is a bit dodgy if someone's claiming to be a certain grade and they're not on the list. But we're not there yet.

If anyone would like to update info on their club or promotions there are forms on the site, and if you're still not getting a response after a week or two then send the information to mark@bjj.ie and i'll personally take care of it. I'm now taking care of keeping the site up to date and I don't study anywhere near as hard as our webmaster so things will get updated :)

Err wasn't insinuating a conspiracy or anything like that, just curious is all, I'm a curious guy.
