Jack Taylor - Galway Cop Drama TV3

Anyone watching this at the moment?

Good production values (nice moody colour grade; a bit like Rebus) but Taylor (Iain Glen) is a bit 'Oirish'. And nobody in Galway says 'The Roisin Dubh Pub - It's just the Roisin Dubh.

Trying desperately to paint Galway as a something it really isn't IMO. And the usual Irish bit-part actors are turning up one by one.

its cliched as **** and the story is a bit weak. the dialogue is crap, the soundtrack not much better. the acting is real poor in parts. and why get a scot to play an irish man? other than that its not bad

Thought is was a bit disappointing, tried to make the Gardai out to be super-slick, bad-ass rogues akin to the LAPD, Iain Glen's accent was neither Scottish nor Irish, more American if anything. The plot was somewhat unimaginative (I guessed the villain after the first 20 mins) and generally the acting was hammish. In fairness there were some good scenes, particularly with the minister at the beginning. In summary, it was like an Irish, low budget remake of 8mm.

I'm with you on that one, Civil. Good start to the show but it all went down hill from there.

From the credits, it appears to be co-produced/funded by RTL TV in Germany. Thought they'd have paid more attention to the landscape and streets - to appear to the Germans, like. Could have been any northern european city the way it was shot.

Because of the way it was shot (lots of focus on characters with backgrounds blurred) you'd have to know Galway fairly well to relate to it.

Looked like an expensive production and there didn't seem to be much PR done at all. I only saw it in the tv listings.

It'll be interesting to see if this pilot will make it to a series.

Are they really going to be showing it in Germany? I hugely doubt it.

Imagine if RTE/TV3 had some German detective series that was dubbed/subbed. That would seem very unlikely to me, but that's what it would be like (although I suppose they would have to dub/sub their CSIs etc. anyway).

And if they did show it, it would be as some late night slot I would think.

Why would a German station co-fund something on a small, commercial Irish station in that case?

It was a co-production between Magma Films (Galway) and RTL Germany. Dubbed or not, and in god-knows what time of the day, It'll be shown over there without a doubt.

A similar example being ITV's Midsomer Murders being co-produced with WBBH (or something) in Boston. The viewers over in the states loved the first few series. With the cutbacks in ITV the only possible way for some series to continue was through foreign funding.

Ditto 'Single Handed'. Originally produced for RTE. The show was shown on ITV and the second series was recommissioned on the basis that one of the ITV networks took a shine to it and co-funded the next series.

This one, however, is an amusing one and for once, ARAIK I didn't see The Irish Film Board as a 'financial support' being mentioned in the credits.

It's all ready aired in Germany.

I watched it and felt that it was pretty mediocre fare with some of the worst acting I've seen in a long time. The villains of the piece were obvious from their very first appearances
I actually turned to my mom during the art gallery scene and said the bad guys are the art dealer and Ralph Brown
Pretty much every supporting cast member gave an astonishingly dreadful performance, I think I spent more time recoiling in horror at the awfulness of them than anything else. The plot was also rather mundane, clichéd and full of so much coincidence that nobody could ever take it seriously.

It was very much a bargain basement Rebus, poorly plotted, badly acted and shot by a hyperactive monkey who seemed more interested in trying to ape slick American fare such as CSI than actually framing his shots properly resulting in a very made for TV feel.

I'm thankful that Dominic West dropped out of the production when he did..

Watched it for 5 mins...could'nt take the perculiar accents and the over-acting...clearly they're hoping to sell to the yanks....5 mins of my life wasted....

I didn't think it was too bad. Acting wasn't top drawer, but production values were excellent. Thought Iain Glen's accent was dodgy as hell. I think he was going for the Apprentice narrator effect.

Caught the first few minutes of this.. I actually thought it was an Irish made, made-for-TV film.. didnt realise it was a new series.. I saw the start of it with the guy chasing down and punching the Minister "because of the nurses"... I switched over after that..

    Cringe worthy.

It was one of the more cringe-worthy things I've seen on Irish television. What was going on with his accent? Couldn't make heads nor tails of it.

I live-tweeted the whole thing. Enjoy:

This episode will be about a vigilante gang killing people with pikes. It'll probably be every bit as good as it sounds.

Ok, last chat about the Jack Taylor TV progs was 2 years ago, when the movie aired on TV3. Unfortunately I missed it. However, the first installment of a new series "The Pickman Murders" viewed tonight, again on TV3 at 9:30pm. Anybody see it?

Reading previous feedback, it was a mixed bag... and some of the criticism I agree with. HOWEVER, if you are a fan of Ken Bruen's novels, where the original idea came from, then you will enjoy watching this. True, it's not a realistic translation, but it is nice to see good novels transfered to pictures.

I LOVE Ken Bruen's novels, and his Jack Taylor series is particularly good. But for anyone who has not read his work before, I highly recommend you get it out from your local library (then it won't cost you, and these day's we're all poor). His writing is raw and brilliant. I am thrilled to see that his imagination is being converted to pictures and he's earning a few bob. With respect, do you know that on average, Irish novelists earn about Euro 20,000 pa????

    ZDF. Not RTL. But why?

Jack Taylor is awesome. He's such a bad-ass! Amazing writing too, example "big imagination for a little bird"-greatest line ever! Love the fact he's always drunk too and the screen goes all blurry, so realistic. Some man. What a show!

I think if TV3 had been involved we would have got a stronger drama which would be more realistic to the source material. You would wonder why they didn't use Irish Directors, rather then importing German directors. It is a pity that an Irish broadcaster could not get involved. Single Handed = English idea of Ireland while Jack Taylor = German idea of Germany in Ireland.

It's a pity he didn't have more of a say.

In studio work was made in Germany

I couldnt take the program seriously with the chap who plays the idiot in the Bulmers ad... When Jack pointed the gun at him, I expected him to say "this is not how we sort out our problems in the orchard."

Is this a series or one off drama?

It's a four part series divided into two cases, the second of which The Magdalene Martyrs starts tonight.

I thought it was preety good. I didn't see the gaurd, but I like the Pikeman Murders. The last scene between the Father and Son was disturbing:O And I like the main character. Also, the Magdeline Martyrs episode was preety good.
