    Hi,

I'm looking for some advice or guidance on something.

I've considered going to see a therapist lately to talk about some issues that aren't really major. I can live with them but at the same time talking to someone would help.

I was wondering has anyone had any experience of a private therapist in Dublin or can they give any advice? It's hard to know who might be any good and who might have decided to set up in their sitting room.

Also, what is the typical cost? It seems fairly expensive like about 80 a session. That's putting me off a bit because I think the social consequences of having no money left to socialise or enjoy myself with after seeing the therapist might cause more problems than not seeing a therapist!

    Any advice appreciated.

after seeing the therapist might cause more problems than not seeing a therapist!
possibly and not jus t financial. dont forget anyone can hang up a sign and call themselves a therapist in ireland. or the more discerning will be member therapy organisations which are just paid up members clubs. if you want help seek a psychologist, a real psychologist not a pop psychologist. make sure they are regd with the psychological society of ireland

about two years ago i saw a psychotherapist for about a year and i 100% recommend it to anyone who has things they need to work through, it was one of the best things that i have ever done for myself.

i found my therapist through a phone number my doctor gave me, it was to some company who keep contact details of registered and reputable therapists in different parts of the city (or it might be for all over the country, i can't remember). unfortunately i don't have the name or number of the company anymore to give you, but if you talk to your doctor they will be able to advise you on what to do.

the therapist i saw charged a fee of €55 an hour which wasn't too bad and that was a couple of years ago so the chances are prices may have dropped slightly since then. the handy thing is that how often you attend therapy sessions is entirely up to you, so you if you don't have the money for a session every week you can just go as often as you can afford.

i'd urge you to take the leap and i hope it will help with your difficulties.

Thanks for the reply, that sounds like positive advice. And it seems you paid a reasonable amount. I guess I just need to find the right therapist.

These organisations are not open to just anyone - for IACP or IAHIP for instance, you have to be able to prove you are suitable qualified, have completed a certain number of both client hours and supervision hours in training, as well as a number of CPD workshops, and this continues after gaining membership too. A minimum of 100 client is required during training, and a further 450 hours before you get full membership, in the case of IACP.

OP - I would urge you to contact the IACP for a list of therapists in your area, for a reuptable therapist.
