    1-2-3-4?

Well depending on the pain of the submission and the awareness of the ref,it should take 1 minimum for the ref to stop the fight.

    Three in competition.

    Well if you verballly tap

I always verbally tap along with a single hand tap as I find the opponent is quicker to release when he hears you. If my mouth is completely covered it's usually a rapid succession of taps until I'm free!

really it does depend on what position and situation your in, but id say 3 anyways!!

with one you could just be moving position and the ref could see it another way

Well if 'The Tash' Mazzaaagaatti is reffing, then it's a 15 tap minimum!

    Fedor only needed one.

This was my point. If i was reffing a fight and seen the fighter tap once it would be enough for me. But alot of people think it must be two or three.

when i tap i make sure to do a few, 3 or more.

At the no gi open in march i was in a half guard 'head lock' and put my hand down on my opponents leg to try and escape, frustratingly it made a laud slap noise and the ref (and spectators) thought I tapped which makes it very awkward explaining to people that it wasn't. Props to the ref who repositioned us and let us continue. And luckily for me I was able to win the fight.

Point is I learned a lesson about not making stupid movements when in compromising situations.

I tap like a maniac in training, I do it in comps 2.

    I'd think one and/or scream.

    What's IBJJF guidelines?

    A tap is a tap, if there's 1, 3 or 10

The problem with one tap, and I've seen it happen, is that to the ref & everyone else there's been a clear 'tap out' but then the fighter apparently tapping out desputes this & uses the excuse that he/she was repositioning (or some other excuse) - and a lot of times that's correct & the judge made an error in judgement, but not always ;)

To most practitioners 3 taps is the recognised submission, I don't know anyone who teaches or has been taught less in this case is good.

I would of thought at least 3 unless a verbal confirmation was made aswell

To be honest I feel it's almost kind of disrespectful to your opponent to just give one of those half-hearted single taps, I always feel like they're being resentful of tapping and its basically saying "ah well i suppose I should tap then...", and I'd agree with Makikomi in that it also often feels like they're trying to leave themselves the opportunity to go "oh i was only readjusting"

Personally in competition especially I won't tap till I really need to in which case i'll tap hard continuously until i feel my opponent start to let go - in practise this is usually 3 or 4.

Ok thanks for the answers. I seems to be anything from one but preferably two or three!!
    Bit of a grey area.

So this leads me to another question.

If a fighter (mma) is caught in a submission and "taps" but the ref misses it and then the fighter who "tapped" goes on and wins the fight what happens then?
Would the losing fighter have grounds to get the fight called an NC?
Or should the promoter give an immediate re-match?
Oh and lets say the fight is on video so it can be re-watched and the incident seen.

Sometimes if I'm caught in a standing submission I tap the celing three times with my head. Only in certain events though.

i guess its abit like football, if the ref makes a mistake he cant go back and change it an hour or two later

Then the guy who had the submission sunk in deserves to lose, and get a kick in the balls to boot, for letting go before the ref stopped him.

I mean, anybody who saw Royce and Ken in the first UFC knows that, right??:D

Anyone have to owe up to having to tap by banging their foot off the ground ?

I think one tap is enough. If a ref has to wait for more an arm or leg could be broken, if the sub is put on fast. People should know better than to make "tapping movements" while in bad positions if they dont really want to tap.

I always use verbal and tap combo,

??? Owe up? If your mouth is covered so u can't verbally submit, and ur arms/hands are all tied up then ur not really left with much of an option! I think 3 taps is good rule of thumb - one isn't enough just in case it is an accident, but you never tap 3 times by accident.

Brock v's Mir I is a good example of someone trying to tread the line between what might be considered a tap or a punch/slap. I think he was trying to see if it was enough like a tap that Mir would let go, but different enough that he could claim it wasn't a tap afterwards.

Why have i had a post deleted from this thread?

The rule states if the referee sees any "attempt to tap" then he is to stop the fight. As mentioned check out fedor or Dolaway vs sadollah.
