Teaching Poetry in 3rd level

    Hi guys,

    I have a few modules this years based on contemporary poetry. I have split the module into a sections. The course has to follow a particular critical framework. I have to discuss three poets and their work in the space of 11 1-hour lectures. The class has around 20 students.

    I have structured the course by looking at key questions (what is contemporary poetry? why these poets? etc.)

    I want as much class interaction as possible. What I've decided on was to dedicate three lectures to each poet (this isn't a comparative class and I can't really bring in all three at once). Would this suffice:

    1. Background on poet/ their place in the canon
    2. Selected poem(s) discussed by teacher
    3. Poem then discussed by student in small groups
    4. Critical framework will be applied to each poem

    What do you think? I cannot think of any other way to teach a poem/ poet. The student will be examined through this critical framework... think if I do as much of that as possible they will use the framework effectively, but I like to do things a bit more creatively and I have no idea how to do it!

    Any suggestions?
