Accomodation

I've just been looking at applying for on-campus accom. for this year. I just sat my leaving cert so I'm inexperienced at this.
In the application form, it asks for your course. I have 2 different courses on my CAO in DCU, and I really have no way of knowing which one I get, if I get either. Does that mean I have to make 2 applications or what?

Also, you have to apply before the results are out. Will I have to put down a deposit even though I'm not sure I'll be going there?

    Thanks.

No, not for first year accomodation at Larkfield anyways. Its free.

Im not sure about the two courses thing. I presume you would put down the higher one. You should probably ring them, though.

    It most certainly isn't free!
Larkfield Apartments The annual rent for a bedroom within Larkfield apartments is €4,048 payable in 2 instalments of €2,137 and €1,912. The first instalment is payable in August and the second the following January.

If you are successful in receiving a room offer you will be required to pay a booking/damage deposit of €300. An electricity deposit of €330 is also required.
I think I will ring them, that's probably the best thing to do.

I was in that situation last year and put down one course and ended up in the other. It never made a difference. I'm not even sure why Campus Res. even need to know your course.

As for payment; nothing is required until after you get offered/and accept a room.

Yes it is. You asked about deposits and I am saying that there is no deposit needed, its free to book, unlike other colleges' accomodation.

You didnt think I meant that Larkfield is free for the year? lol:rolleyes: :p
I'm not even sure why Campus Res. even need to know your course.

I heard that they sometimes try to put people in similar courses together

No not that, I mean you do have to put a deposit down, just not until you're offered a place. I rang today anyway, she said it didn't matter. Thanks :D

anyone got any idea where I could start looking for accommodation off campus because there's not a hope in hell of me getting the 500 points to be guaranteed accommodation on campus...

    Yeah I should've been clearer.

It's not true that they group you by course, they take gender into consideration for the groupings and that's it. Other than that, unless you've requested, you could be living with anyone on any course

Off topic slightly I see DCU are renting out their campus accomodation as a hotel option for tourists €75 for a double room p/person

The 500 points gaurentee's you a room in Hampstead, which is a grade up from Larkfield so to speak, and is mostly 2nd years.
However I reckon it's better in the long run for 1st years to be in LArkfield.

There's still a high chance you'll get a spot in Larkfield with low points.

Well I heard the same as the other guy, that they try and group people by course, same as all the universities. But really it doesn't make much of a difference either way.

I doubt there's that much demand for on campus accom. that there's a high chance of you not getting it...

And if they're renting spaces out to tourists during term time then they definitely don't have that much demand.

500 points doesn't guarantee you Hampstead. Maybe it's more likely you'll get it, but I got over 500 points and got Larkfield and know a good few people who were the same. I don't know exactly how they decide who gets what beyond 500 points guaranteeing you getting some campus accomodation. But like you say, Larkfield is brilliant for first year so it's no bad thing to get it :)

That's just during the summer, pretty much every spot is filled by students during the college year (or has been the last 2 years). I know that not every continuing student who applied last year got it either.

AFAIK getting over 500 points in your Leaving Certificate means you get first priority for on-campus accomodation, but it doesn't mean you'll get one place over another.

I got over 500 and thankfully got a place in Hampstead, which is where I applied for, because I couldn't stand the thought of living in Larkfield.

I assume they still base it on where you applied for, given that people could apply for accomodation in Larkfield because it's cheaper, and it would be unfair then to give them a place in Hampstead.
