    Is that a serious question?

are you asking is a 4.4 automatic petrol MPV going to be fuel efficient?

I drove a diesel x5, it did 35mpg with moderate driving. I would think that a 4.4 petrol x5 would do about 16mpg.

hang on for a diesel one, 4.4l would be a complete alcoholic! There is 5 or 6 on donedeal at the moment if your interested in buying that way.....

That diesel figure must have been mostly on long runs or you are very lightfooted!

16mpg is an ambitious estimate for a petrol x5

In the unlikely event that I was ever tempted by an X5 it'd have to be a V8. Sure it'll use more fuel, but it'll also be a lot cheaper to buy and a lot nicer to drive.

I do about 14MPG in the city center and 30MPG on the motorway at 80Mph with that same engine.
Mine is a 5 series, not a X5 though, X5 might be a tiny more heavy? Not sure.
Those engines are nice, plenty of torque and all, but they are expensive to maintain and they have several known issues. Not nice to the wallet to fix.
    Personally I would prefer a 4.8IS X5 to a 4.4

I was thinking of a petrol variant next too. Given my low annual mileage & availability of cheaper, lower mileage, better specced petrol variants I am seriously tempted.

400 euro difference in tax to consider also.

I have a diesel version, have to say I love it.

i have a Bmw 645 its the same engine 4.4 petrol and i average 24mpg mixed or 32/33 on a run i know someone that had a 4.4 x5 and he was averaging 16-18mpg in mixed city driving , worth it for that beautiful V8 sound though:cool: nothing comes close not even the M5 V10 sounds as good

you should see 35mpg in the diesel, 20mpg at best in the petrol.

IIRC bmw only rate the combined driving of the 4.4 x5 as 20mpg.......

that is the Manufacturers combined figures... and we all know how they reflect real life driving....

i had the 4.4 V8 for a year and loved it.
you will pay less for the petrol version so dont forget to add that into your yearly calculations. most of the V8's have a decent spec too, mine had xenon, full leather, TV/Sat Nav, rear Tv etc etc

i drove from Finglas to Harolds Cross as my commute, and a bit at the weekends, not alot mind you, thats why i went for the petrol version.

if buying the diesel versio then you have to buy the updated 3.0 version, the one with the 220bhp engine that the older 01-03 era or thereabouts is the 184bhp version and theres not alot of mpg difference between the diesel and petrol then.

the 4.4 is a 286bhp engine with 314 foot pounds of torque IIRC and in everyday conditions it was as quick as my Integra Type R 0-60.

the 4.6is version is a beast, its 346bhp and is an absolutse animal on the road, i very nearly bought one but the spec was bog standard SE where the 4.4 i bought was a sport model.

in the year i owned my 4.4 i averaged 16.9 MPG according to the trip computer. the highest i ever got was on a run to Newry on the motorway it average 30MPG.

kceire thanks for that info fair play. i have a bmw 318ci 2 ltr at the mo so would i notice much of a dif in the fuel. i would only use it at weekends and at night as i have a company van. i have an oppertunity to swap my bmw 318 for a x5 4.4i commerical and im tempted. but the 4.4 is throwing me off a bit

a commercial will be impossible to get rid of in the future, especially a V8 petrol one!

Sounds great in theory lads, but I had a 3.0i X5 for a weekend before. Cork to Daingean in Offaly and back was nearly 120 Euro in petrol.
