The iphone could not be restored. This device isn't eligible for the requested build.

OK, so my dad's iphone somehow crashed last night. He went to use it and the screen was blank and it couldn't be turned on. It was fully charged.

So I plugged it into itunes and it said that it was in recovery mode and had to be restored, and I downloaded the recommended software.

Now when I click restore, it says 'extracting', then something about confirming with apple, and then it says 'the iphone could not be restored. the device isn't eligible for the requested build.'

How do I restore the iphone back to the way it was? I have a feeling that the software apple downloaded wasn't 4.0.x, and also the phone is jailbroken fwiw, running 3.1.3.

    Thanks!

What model of iPhone is it? Have you tried restoring it in dfu mode? Go to iclarified for a good guide on that.

    Its a 3GS 16GB.

I went to the iclarified and I done what it recommended but it already appeared to be in DFU mode anyway, the screen was black and the phone was unresponsive.

I tried it on a different computer today and I get the (21) error code.

I phoned 3 about it but the person I spoke to sounded clueless and the promised call from tech support never materialized.

Your problem is that Apple are no longer signing the 3.1.3 firmware for the 3gs.

Whats happening is your iPhone wants to update to 4.0.1 but it cant because your version of iTunes is too old. Update your iTunes to 9.2.1 and you won't have any problem updating.

The latest jailbreak solution for the iPhone 4.0.1 is available and can be done by using safari on the device itself. Its simple as visiting a certain website on the phone and 'slide to jailbreak'

Let us know if this solves it.

I have the latest version of iTunes.

As the phone is in recovery mode at the minute, I cannot do anything with it.

Thanks I'll have a look at that if needs be but I'd rather try something safer first! Think I'll just give it back to 3 and let them sort it, it's probably the easiest solution. I assume that the first thing they will do is restore it, which means the JB will be wiped, correct?
