Major rip off! you get identical stuff in a charity shop with the added benefits of no huge mark ups and youre contributing to a good cause.

    Jaysus it is expensive!!

The vintage stuff i have come across over here and in the charity shop is as good, as original and waaay cheaper. Makes me wonder how people can afford to set up these 'vintage' shops and make money

hmmm, please tell me which charity shops have original 1920s flapper dresses!!! Then I'll be there!

    Totally forgot to reply here.

The clothes in there are beautiful, gorgeous, and in fabulous condition, but yes, very expensive.

Pretty small place too, but nice.

I drove down to Galwya from Leitrim yesterday and I went into the shop yesterday. It was very expensive and there wan't anything that stood out for me as "wow" - although there were some interesting and pretty pieces. I have collected vintage clothing for many years and researched various different labels etc

I personally thought that some of the dresses were not dated correctly. There was some things marked as 1960s, which I could tell were actually 1980s or 1970s. I was also not impressed with the presentation of the shop, the coat hangers were mismatched and I think if you are going to charge high end prices for things, overall presentation in a shop helps to justify the shopping experience for the high prices! But all this could just be my teaste/opinions!! :)

I lived in Galway about 7 years ago whilst I studied at NUIG, there was no real vintage shop to speak of at that time. So I was suprised when my friend suggested that we also visit Public Romance round the corner on Abbeygate street yesterday-which I of course jumped at the chance. But the shop assistant was quite rude as I had my baby boy in the pushchair with me and she obviosuly didn't appreciate him making "noise". I felt immediately unwelcome - which is unusuall anywhere these days. This place was seriously overpriced as well. In comparison to some of the things you can get on ebay or etsy which are the same grade.

There is a vintage fashion fair in the Galway bay hotel on Sept 12th, I went to the one in Dublin earlier in the year, organised by the same crowd, I think if you like vintage this would be a better place to haggle and pick up some gems as there will be sellers from all over the country and further afield!

Hope this makes good reading for you girls. :)

Yup, near the Go Dutch flower shop I think?

Public Romance has a lot of stuff upstairs I can't see shifting in a million years, be it vintage or not so vintage, and it is overpriced.

NOt bothered so that I am not there to see Enchanted Vintage!

And yes, the Vintage Fair (which has been a great success elsewhere) is coming, and details can be found here: http://www.vintageireland.eu/vintage-fairs.html and here: http://www.facebook.com/fbVintageIreland?ref=ts

I've noticed this in many 'vintage' shops too. Sometimes I feel a bit insulted that they think they can fool us consumers with the massive mark-ups because its 'vintage', only the quality can justify the price and some of the 70s and particularly 80s clothes are mass produced and of inferior quality.

Hi everyone, i just wanted to pick your brains about vintage clothing in galway. I am thinking of setting up a vintage shop in galway and wanted to get some ideas about what people really want. My idea is to go back to basics with Jeans, jackets, some tees, leathers, dresses etc like the kind of shops we used to have in galway 15 years ago with out a huge pricing. I can't get a market stall in galway so i will have to go into a shop and yes will then have to charge some more than on a market stall however i would be looking at selling levis for 20/25 in top quality and dresses at about 15 etc. Any tips please email me or drop me a line on here. Thanks guys, i look forward to hearing from you.

Well we already have two if not three vintage stores in Galway now. By the sounds of it you want to set up something a bit like Eager Beaver in Dublin with endless 'retro' tees and lots of jeans, and some dresses?

My advice: don't go crazy expensive if possible.

Also there is a huge selection of unique looking clothes available from stores like Pagan, Zebra, Uniform etc., so don't go down the buying new dresses that might look vintage as there is a lot out there.

Research some of the more successful stores like the ones in London, it's a lot about the interior and feel of a place that makes someone comfortable to shop in there.

I'll have to think of more tips!!

EDIT: Just a question, what kind of shops were you referring to in galway back 15 years ago? my brain is frazzled!

The Eager Beaver has a lot of great guy's stuff downstairs in fairness

Thank you for your reply. I have looked at the shops in Galway and have found that there is a mix of shops offering the high end of Vintage/ used clothing. I have also found that some of the clothes are much more rags with high price than vintage and even in some places where there are high street clothing been passed as vintage.
i would definitely be looking at levis (there is nothing nicer than a used pair of levi 501s to put on), tees and more casual wear. The shops that i was thinking of from many moons ago are Twice as Nice when it first started, the levis shop on the corner of quay stree, a couple on high street one that i remember was run by the dutch couple, and also american madness which was seconds but was retro and funky clothing of the american style. my idea is to have a very casual shop but with a very chic retro feel and with the prices as low as i could have. Any other tips would be very useful and if you feel it would work i would be grateful for your personal thoughts.

    Thanks again

Oh wow that dutch shop (used to be where The Mews apartments are now?) was brilliant; my mother adored that place and apparently dressed me head to toe in their kids clothes (I feel young). That place was great, and I remember when Twice as Nice didn't stock all the expensive stuff they stock now.

I def think you could do well with the Levis, I always now people wanting originals and teeshirts at a good price you're on a win-win with galway folk. People love a find, a bargain, without feeling guilty having spent a bomb on some flimsy rag as you described some of the tack around.

Nice to have a comfy retro feel without being too prissy and 'scene-y'. Personally I like to feel I can browse and try on stuff without feeling pressured or followed by staff. I guess a lot goes on customer service.

I'd def suggest bringing in some small leather bags, and leather satchels etc if you had them, there's always a demand for them, as well as neck scarves etc.

Ps if you need staff you know who to call (don't shoot me mods for asking, there's recession ya know!). I'll keep thinking :)

The other F+P regulars I'm sure will be able to suggest things, they're great in this forum for ideas!

Enchanted, It's good you feel passionate about what you do and I'm sure you are expert at this stage in the industry (that is not me being patronising, as I do admire people in this industry). Maybe on this thread some people just aired their own views which they are entitled to as are you.

I haven't been, but online I found the initial prices a bit of a shock, but granted I haven't seen or felt the quality and not in a position, really, to make any judgement, so I'll retract my  face.... The original purpose of this thread was to find out what people made of the shop, because I physically can't go in myself, so everyone is entitled to their opinions on what they made of the shop and its products

    Thank you Lady Maybelle.

I certainly did not mean to upset anyone by putting my thoughts up on this board. I was simply giving my own honest opinion. I did like a lot of the stuff in the shop and on the website but its too expensive for me, as I know where I can get similar things for a lot less.

Just to say, in comparision to the Public Romance shop round the corner, I thought the lady in the Galway shop was very welcoming - I forgot to mention that in my last post. That certainly made a better experience when visiting Enchanted in comparision to the nearest rival!

I remain a fan of Enchanted - but I still think that there is more and more competition in this market, especially online and its good to shop around!

So many "vintage"shops are opening these days, the word vintage is being bandied about, half the time they arent even old.Not too mention just because something is old, does not necessarily make it cool.

Oh this really does get up my nose, when stuff is flogged as vintage and it clearly came from Penneys and has being rejigged by someone sewing buttons onto it or something. Also I agree with your second point; where I volunteer, there is a 'vintage' rack and I swear to god the tack that gets shoved onto that rail is horrific!

I do have to say there are some shops in Galway that stock 'vintage' (not your one at this point, Enchanted as I haven't been, but plan to over Christmas) and it's clearly the only thing vintage about it is the age of it.

I am OBSESSED with vintage clothes was at the fare last weekend - great to have it in Galway. Bought fab black velvet dress and OMG I love it a bit pricey tho at €65.
I have to say adore this store- Public Romance. It is the type of place you would need to go regularly though-I have picked up some class stuff there an original 1970s catsuit and a silk and lace 50s dress the cat suit was €25 and dress €35 and an amazing jacket dont know exact vintage but its class €30 as far as I can remember.

I m really surprised you found staff unfriendly - when I was there were uber friendly and helpful to what needed- even did free alterations!

I planned to go into Enchanted Vintage shop last week but just ended up walking past it! because...when I looked in window it was sooo small and pokey I know I wouldn't have felt comfortable having a look around and then leaving so unless I was actually looking to buy something I wouldn't go in there.
Plus I looked at website and waay outta my price range:o

I had friends over from Holland to visit few weeks ago and she's really into vintage so we went into Public Romance for a look and she picked up a gorgeous black frill dress for €25 and her boyfriend got a beige chord jacket with elbow patches for €25 much cheaper than I expected for shop like that.
I called him "professor" for rest of week though!:D

Guy in there was nice and helpful without been in your face, loads of accessories too which I'd be more interested in

I used to like Dopey Doras when I was younger they had some cool stuff

Anyone been to "Don't call me Dear" on Mill Street?
It's always closed when I pass it

Sorry Ceribabe, but the two posts you made about Public Romance are a bit confusing. So did you have a good experience or not with the shop assistant and may I ask was she a worker or the owner?(from what I know the owner has a silver hair, not good at describing people :P)

I'm just wondering because I have been in there a few times and when ever the owner is there she is more then welcoming to help out, offer assistant on clothes and even give free alterations(I was talking to her and she told me shes has a fashion degree). She would also tell me what stock she has back at her storehouse if I was interested in anything.

Overall I thought she tries and have a great relationship with her customers. Appertly as well that downstairs are fashion designer clothes while all the vintage was upstairs.

With the Enchanted Vintage store, from what i can tell they are both different type of vintage stores. Enchanted vintage is great if you are looking for those old look dresses, however I would agree it is a bit over priced, Galway seems to have gotten a big blast of clothes shop around lately, and I have to say it is great for people to really try and make jobs for themselves.

I concur - AFAIK the girl with the gray hair in Public Romance is called Sinead she is very stylish and friendly lass. (Meh- if I had her coolness would be an ice queen! )
The lady that has Enchanted name escapes me but have to say found her equally friendly and helpful. It is imperritive IMHO for knowlagable and helpful staff in this business- I love chatting to the owners bout what new stock getting in and fashion trends.
Think its small boutiques like this that will bring light to the dismal economy and the more vintage the better :)
