Is it worth going to an Irish School of Motoring instructor compared others?

I have had a combination of 10 professional driving lessons by two different driving instructors from two different learning to drive motoring schools. Three by the first instructor, seven by the second whereby I learnt a lot more from. I have recieved 20-30+ driving lessons from my accompany driver and yet I haven't made much progress in the past two years. So would it be worth going to a School of Motoring Instructor? They might be more structured, cater for the needs of the learner driver better, their hours are better whereby you can get your lessons any day of the week in comparison to other driving schools. I'm on my second provisional and will last me for the next two years so its either a case of sink or swim or else my accompany driver is going to sell my car! :( Seriously concidering changing instructors anyway!

What is you take on this? Do you think going to ISM be worth learning to drive from? Start from scratch like!?

    ISM? Rip off merchants imo.

Make sure you go for a registered ADI and you will be grand.

I just passed my test a couple of weeks ago and if you are looking for a reccomended ADI in north dublin give me a pm

I had a terrible experience with ISM, although it's some years ago now and their practices may have improved. But I refused to drive a car for five years after the incident and it had a serious impact on my life for quite a while afterwards. BUT. . .

. . . if you ask around you'll get good and bad stories about every instructor and every school - it's all a matter of what suits you. I'd suggest asking drivers you actually know, so you can take the advice of people whose driving style is most like yours (eg I'm a nervous, timid driver. If my petrolhead mate liked an instructor, odds are I won't, although the instructor is probably excellent - just not right for me).

Also, be very clear with your instructor and tell him/her where you are and where you want to be. When I started again I told my instructor I was getting back into driving after a very long gap and was very nervous and wanted to take it slow, so he did. About a month ago, I told him I was getting serious about taking my test, and he's gotten stricter since :)

Just don't think that ISM or any other large reputable driving school will wave a magic wand - tell them what you feel you're weak at, or if you don't really know, tell them you're very serious about taking your test again imminently and want to work towards that.

    Best of luck :)

ya went with two ADIs and their pricing was different! €40 for the one I learnt very little from €35 from the other instructor who I learnt alot more from but honestly I have to start from scratch again as my driving hasn't improved much since I started! I'm in the kerry area so dublin is out of the question, when I lived there I didnt feel too comfortable about doing lessons there so avoided it same goes for cork too!

i used ISM in Naas a year ago and they were brilliant.... and yes ADI approved.

instructor was sound and knew what he was talking about and got everything pin point perfect on my test compared to my other instructor who was about €5 cheaper but not ADI approved and was more worried about his car than anything else, some points he said were wrong also.

first test from the first instructor i got about 9 grade 2's, 3 grade 3's and something else... but like i said in my post in the unsuccessful thread i blame the tester too.

second test (used ISM) he picked up on everything that i should improve on and he made me improve perfectly to what was needed (as well as being a sound bloke) total i got was 2 grade 2's and one of them was cos i was a bit too close to the curb while reversing around the corner... had i being a few cm's out like my instructor told me to do i would have it perfect.

the opel corsa i used from ISM was deadly too. :)
