I'd really recommend a hostel called The Rucksack. Good location and excellent staff. You'll find it on hostelworld.com I think.

I stayed in Hotel Ibis on Bencoolen St.

    http://www.ibishotel.com/gb/hotel-6657-ibis-singapore-on-bencoolen/index.shtml

For three nights at the start of July enroute to Australia, it is a new hotel and is located just up the street from the Sim Lim Square Shopping Centre which is a massive shopping centre totally dedicated to computers and all manners of consumer gadgetry stuff. It is not the cheapest mall however and most stuff they sell can be got online here for less.

Singapore however is expensive throughout and alcohol there is daylight robbery. With a domestic or asian import of bottle of beer costing anywhere between €9 to €12 equivalent in SGD. Singapore is very wealthy and it not reflective of "true asia". The tropical wet humid climate I found to be unbearable also and it was like stepping into a steam room outside the airport! Night time offers no let up either as it is 24/7 365 and it rains most days also for an hour or two before the steam bath resumes normal service.

The Hotel Ibis is nice, brand new and has free wifi (2MB) food is not too cheap but nice. It is also close to a Metro stop if you want to explore more of the city. We did the Night Safari in Singapore Zoo which was a bit stupid as it mainly consisted of a Animal show where trained animals strutted their stuff (Great for kids) and a Safari tour by open tram bus where you get to see all the wild animals in the jungle, but being by night it is limited. To do this by day would be much more worthwhile. We paid €52 per person sharing per night at the Ibis but we could have got it cheaper only we booked late on lastminute.com and if you book earlier it would be cheaper.

If you have loads of cash then stay at the newly opened Sands Hotel and Casino, which is really cool and there is a cool observation deck at the top which is open to the public for SGD$20. A room is around 300SGD a night there.

Singapore is really only a glorified shopping centre and not really a destination on its own but is popular with people enroute to somewhere else thanks to Changi Airport and Singapore Airlines. If wishing to break the journey to Australia or New Zealand I'd go for Bangkok next time as a stop off point even if it does add more flying time.

Another vote for Little India. Can't remeber the name of the place though. There are a lot of options and you can ignore some of the info on drink prices given in a earlier post if you stay around there (or anywhere but the 5 star hotel areas).

    And the food...:)

I think you just got ripped off tbh. I don't remember paying anymore than $5 for a beer, possibly a couple dollars more in the airport but that's it.

Yea dont remember beer being THAT expensive only in raffles though and I have been there 3 times.

Accomidation wise, depends on what you want to pay but I found the holiday inn Very good!

Ripped of yes, however they all seemed to be around the same prices and both alcohol and cigarrettes were both very expensive in Singapore. A box of 20 cigarettes was running at like SGD$17.

Beer prices in Singapore a crazy. We paid €23 for a pitcher of beer. Thats around 2 1/2 pints. We were in loads of places that charged around €10 for a pint. Only in the Hawker stalls it's cheap at €2.50 for a large bottle. Some clubs are €10 in with a free drink. Not a place you would want to plan a major session.

Anyway there is tons more to do in Singapore than drink, its a VERY underrated city IMO. Sure its not the real asia but I quite like it. And the food there is cheap and mouth watering!! One of the best places in the world for food!!

Dont understand why one has to concentrate on drink prices anyway.

I dont think anyone is concentrating on drink prices. Just pointing out its very expensive.
Here's a few ideas on what to do:

Well it can give an indication of how much money you're going to spend there. Also in some countries (not Malaysia) it can give you an idea of how expensive the country is in general. At it's something we can just about all relate to!

Remember not to bring chewing gum. I got searched at the border and they very dramatically bagged and tagged it.
