L Plates Falling Off!

Hi all, bit of a strange question but it's really getting under my skin!

I bought a set of L plates to put up on my mum's car while I'm learning to drive in it, and they just won't stay on! I'm not worried about the front one, because I have my accompanying driver (usually my mother!) to stick it back on for me when it falls off, but yesterday when I was out driving the back one fell off while I was in traffic, and I was really worried because none of the cars behind me knew I was a learner.

I pulled over and stuck the bloody thing back on as soon as I could, but by the end of my hour driving it had come loose again and was hanging off.

This has happened me with two sets of L plates on two different cars so it's obviously something I'm doing wrong. Am I supposed to wet them? Glue them on? :) Is there anywhere where I can buy the old sticker-type L plates?

When I had L-Plates, I used to secure them on with sellotape at the corners. Also, make sure there are no air bubbles in the L-Plate (smooth them out completely) and they won't fall off so easily.

Are you sure you peeled off the thin plastic cover on the L Plates ?

    Blue tack works on glass.

Some plates are sticky on the back for putting on outside the car... Maybe these are the type you have?

Though most can be stuck either side.

Thanks for the replies - I definitely did take off the backing, I bite my nails so it took forever :) And I always smooth them out with no air bubbles but they still come loose! They aren't sticky on either side, they're the very thin vinyl ones that are supposed to cling by themselves. Ha!

I will try blue tack or sellotape if they don't stay up on their own this time, thanks!

Does your mum use some cleaning product on the inside of her windscreen that might stop them from sticking, maybe?

are you sticking them on the windows on the inside or outside of the car? Sticking them on the outside window they will always fall off! mine got robbed one time! I have since put mine sticking on in the inside of the windows. Sellotape is probably a good idea if they are a persecution of trying to keep them on.

I'm sticking them on the inside. I tried them on the outside at one point because I was so sure I was doing it wrong and the less said about what happened, the better. Ahem. :p

I don't think it's a cleaning product because it happened yesterday on a car she had just bought and hadn't cleaned herself yet, so it looks like I'll be breaking out the Sellotape. . . .

Ugh I had those ones, they're crap!

    Sellotape is your friend ;)

They are far from crap if you put them up right, just get a j-cloth and wet it, rub it over the corner of the windscreen where you intend to put it, put the L-Plate in place doing your best to not leave air bubble. When you have it up use the wet j-cloth and rub over the L-Plate to take out any more air bubbles and if the corners come loose, wet under them again, push onto the glass and rub over again with the cloth. Once the window is clean and you put them up that way, they won't come off until someone pulls em off!

I cannot stand the sight of sellotape holding L-plates up, they are nasty enough looking as they are without adding accessories to em lol

Thanks for the tip, I'll break out the J Cloth next time I'm taking the car out :)

A wee bit of sellotape won't do any harm and will hopefully reassure you that they're in place and allow you to concentrate on your driving.

If you dampen the L-Plate they should stick with no problems!
