Zebra crossings

I was recently travelling as a passenger in my sister's car, when we came upon a zebra crossing, complete with flashing amber beacons. It is my belief that the driver is obliged to stop at such a crossing if a pedestrian is waiting to cross, but my sister swore blind that I was wrong and that the beacons are simply to warn drivers to be cautious as somebody may be crossing. I am convinced that I am right, but a quick Google search has not thrown up any concrete link, so I was hoping the knowledgeable members of this forum could give me a hand. Thanks in advance, Gingerhousewife.

    hi op!
i would have to agree with yourself in saying that if u happened to be passing just as someones about to cross then yes i do think you would be obliged to stop for them :) but your sisters theory of them just being there as act an act of caution for drivers doesn't sound too right tbh, But im sure the rsa or gay byrne would have a definate answer for ya if u were to get in contact lol ;)

Glad to see you found your answer!!! :)

Scary thread. I'll close it now, as the question has been answered. OP -you might advise your sister to have a read through the ROTR.
