Very well judged win and keeps his title hopes alive as well.

He's in talks(according to MCN) with Yamaha in WSBK(you'd have to say to replace Crutchlow, if Rossi leaves for Ducati Yamaha could move him to MotoGP) as well as Marc VDS in Moto2. I think theres a great chance to see him back in GPs and actually able to show what he can do.

And to agree with the OP it is a disgrace that one of the few sportsman in this country that is gunning for a world title can rarely get even a cursory note in a paper after winning

When he wins the title i'm sure RTE will give him a mention after the "muck snorkelling" spot...

Absolutly correct Frostie, Laverty is one of our best sportsmen at the moment and I've never heard mention of him on any Irish news bulletin whatsoever. If he wins the championship it'll be great for the sport of motorcycle racing in Ireland and I? wish him all the best for the future.
On a side note I'd love to see Cal Crutchlow going to GP's for Yamaha he's a big talent and has a good attitude which I admire.

Bet I wasn't the only one kneeling on the floor, one foot from the TV, for that last lap! Eugene will be the cause of me getting a heart attack if he does that again! What a race. I also bet no one in RTE saw it. They tend to miss the boat, so whats new. Best of luck to Eugene!:)

Yea its a sad state of affairs on RTE alright, to think there's so much quality motorcycle racing taking place in Ireland and never is it shown on the so called premier Irish channels its a disgrace, sure the NW200 attracts the biggest outdoor crowd in Ireland and the regular road races attract a fair audience so why do they not show it not to mention all the other races which take place in mondello, Nutts Corner etc.

Just to let everyone know this week I wrote about the success of Laverty and Rea on the world scene. Its not in the national press but I thought i needed to do something about the lack of coverage given to the pair of them!

The full article can be viewed here, with Rea and Laverty included in the article headed: "McLaren face uphill struggle in highly competitive F1 battle"

    Gwan the Norge
Yamaha has signed a contract with current World Supersport title contender Eugene Laverty to join the Yamaha Sterilgarda World Superbike Team on the YZF-R1 alongside MotoGP rider Marco Melandri for the 2011 season. 24 yr old Laverty from Northern Ireland is a proven racer, having come second to Yamaha’s reigning World Supersport Champion Cal Crutchlow in the 2009 championship with four race wins. He is currently just 12 points behind the lead in the current standings with two further rounds to go having taken seven race wins and five pole position starts so far this season.

Laverty is no stranger to Yamaha, taking time out from the 250cc MotoGP Championship to enjoy two wild card World Supersport rides in 2008 in place of injured rider Fabien Foret. The young rider adapted quickly, scoring an impressive podium finish with third in his second outing at Vallelunga.

“It’s great to have a contract signed at this stage while still fighting for the title in the Supersport class. I desperately want to win this year before moving on,” said Eugene Laverty. “When I rode the Yamaha YZF-R6 in World Supersport in 2008 I was having a tough time in 250s, it’s nice that Yamaha brought me to the fore and are now giving me the opportunity within superbike. Ben Spies winning the championship in 2009 and Cal Crutchlow now stepping up and winning races shows the bike and team are more than capable so the rest is up to me. I think with the team support and a good testing schedule we can start the 2011 championship ready to be competitive from the first race and be on the podium as early as possible. Having a teammate like Marco Melandri is great, he has a wealth of experience to learn from so I’m going to enjoy riding with him.”

“We’ve been very impressed with Eugene in the World Supersport Championship,” said Yamaha Motor Europe Racing Manager Laurens Klein Koerkamp. “He is a very talented racer who has shown great dedication to training, is focussed on victory and we know he’s a great person to work with. We have proved with Cal Crutchlow that we have the facility to bring young riders through from World Supersport, continue to nurture and develop them in World Superbike and provide them with further opportunities in MotoGP if the situation is right. We look forward to working with Eugene and believe he has the talent to continue through with Yamaha into the future.”

Excellent news for Laverty I'm extremly pleased for him and wish him all the best for next season.
Hopefully someone with the experience of Melandri will be an ideal team mate for him.

Delighted that he's got sorted but have to say I was hoping to see him in Moto2! Best career move available for him, as the first post said that is fantastic and should offer a stepping stone to MotoGP in the next few years. Great that we'll see Rea and Laverty on top line Sueprbike machinery next year hopefully battling for the title!

Should be interesting alright. Eugene has buckets of talent and his brothers aren't bad in BSB. I believe he has a brother plays Gaelic for Antrim, a talented family. Here is the latest from his site http://eugenelaverty.com/ .

Reamins to be seen Melandri is a top rider although his last few seasons have been ropey I still think he'll be more than a match for any superbike rider. Remember he beat Rossi when he was at his best.

How do you think it will go at Imola on Sunday ? Appearently Sofuoglu is supposed to like the track, it said to be one of his favourites.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 715 ✭✭✭HellsAngel

Thrilling race, but it wasn't to be. TBH, glad Sofuoglu made it back on the bike to win the race. Let's be honest, it would have been seen as well, possibly bad sportsmanship otherwise - though Sofuoglu would have done the exact same.

Still in with a chance, but slim. Stranger things have happened in sport, especially motorsports

Sofulogue or whatever way it's spelled came second and Eugene was third.
Great race and great to see the old "win or bin" is still going strong.
Laverty should have scrambled faster to get ahead of Sofologue? after the crash and gained a couple more points.

Sorry my mistake, Sofuoglu 2nd Eugene 3rd. That's what happens when your dashing to finish before time up in an internet cafe !

Congratulations to Eugene winning todays race and securing second place in the championship. An excellent rider and a big talent to watch out for in the future.

8 wins from 13 starts this season unlucky with what happened at portimao and brno but excellent season for him cant wait to see him on the yam next year just hope its a better bike than it has been this year

and congrats to kenan looking forward to him taking over tomizawa's ride for the last two moto2 races

Kenan Sofouglu is a dangerous racer IMO and I don't think he's got what it takes to do anything useful in Moto 2 he's just far too eratic and will probably get injured. It's just a pity the bikes aren't 2 stroke any more cos watching him attempting to ride them would have been hilarious:)

I'm really looking forward to seeing Eugene on a Sueprbike. He's been fantastic on the Super Sports bike and even though he missed out on the title it was clear that he was the fastest rider in the class.

It will be very interesting to see how he does in comparision to Crutchlow's performances this season. Cal managed to get six poles this year and with Spies having won the title the year before its clear that Laverty is going to a team used to success and ready to win consistently. Having Melandri as a teammate will be an enormous boast for him as well. Marco is a former world champion and while he has struggled aboard the 800cc MotoGP bikes he still has more than enough ability to be successful about the superbike, and give us a great yardstick of what Eugene can achieve
