Change in Work Pattern/Hours

    Hi there,

    (May be in wrong section) I am contracted to work a 35 hour week over X number of days and my employer wants to change number of days but not number of hours, is there any minimum notice I am entitled to before I have to comply or do I just have to deal with it and accept the change immediately? Not a problem to many people in need of a job, I realise, but my childminder is not so cooperative. Any advice welcome.

    It depends on a number of things.

    What does it say in your terms of employment? If it says that your employer can change the hours/days without consultation, then you might have a problem.

    However, if it says that you need to be consulted, and agree to them, then you can't be forced to change without your express permission.

    Most likely, there is nothing in your terms of employment to cover this particular situation. As such, it would have to be done on a negotiated basis.

    I would suggest that you discuss the issue with your employer, outlining your concerns, and problems. This way, you can possibly negotiate better pay for the same hours, or something similar.

    You should also check to see what your new entitlements would be, in terms of extra pay, break times, etc, before you approach your employer. You might find that they suddenly want to keep you on the same schedule that you are on now.
