Claiming Tax Back if you're a student

    Hey guys,
Truth is, I'm a bit of a dummy when it comes to tax and things like this, so I'm just hoping someone can help. I started my first job on the 17th May 2010. So, for just over 2 months work I have earned e1404.85 (Net pay).

I have been taxed e508.96. Does anybody know if I'm entitled to claim all or any this back?

It's a part time job, I'm a full time student, but hope to continue working during the academic year.

    Thanks in advance!!!

    Emma :)

    Ok, Emma it's like this!:

You say this is your first job, so based on that the simple answer is that you should not be paying any tax (yet) in that job - the tax you have paid so far should be repayable to you, but this will require you to contact the tax office to sort out whatever has gone on with your tax credits.

Given that you say you don't have a clue about tax etc. there's little point in going on and on speculating about how / why you've been deducted the tax - it may be emergency tax, or due to your tax credits not having been allocated in full for some reason.

The only way to know for certain is if you ring the PAYE helpline for your region. You'll need your PPS Number to hand. Explain your situation to them, and that you want all of your tax credits allocated to your current job, and they should be able to sort you out in a couple of minutes... and your employer should then refund you the tax through the payroll in due course.
