iPhone 4 - Battery life?

Just wondering if anyone is having any issues with the bttery on their iPhone 4? Reading a lot of reviews on the net they all say that the battery life is vastly improved on the 3GS, some reporting that with extensive use of the phone that they didn't even reach red after a full days use on a full charge. I upgraded to iPhone 4 from 3G on Friday and I'm now wondering wether my battery is faulty. I'm struggling to get a whole day from a full charge? Might bring it back to o2 but I presume I'll be waiting a while before I can get a replacement.

Did you set it up as new or used an old backup?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 86 ✭✭RedLegend

Old back up. Does that affect the battery life?

Make sure you close the background programmes, (like skype)

I've done that. Am finding batt life on par with my old 3G and that goes against everything I'm reading on the net.

Yeah my 4 is as bad if not worse than my 3gs

I would suggest setting up as new if you are experiencing poor battery performance.

Coming from a HTC Hero I gotta say the iPhone 4 battery life is dreadful!

Anyone compare the iphone 4 battery life to N900..have had my N900 connected to data since 9am this morning and it's on 10% remaining now.

Backups may sometimes contain data that is corrupted. I normally set up as new if going from an old OS to a new OS too.

So from iOS 3.xx to iOS 4.xx I set up as new.

iPhone battery (believe it or not) gets better with use due to the nature of the battery I believe (li-ion) so it will be quite poor the first few times you use it alright. Noticed it with my new 3gs when I had it.

When I transferred from meteor to three, I knew I would have needed to charge the phone during the day given 3 is a 3G only network and 3G wares down the network.

I carry a mobile powered with me to charge the phone when it's needed and so far it is.

Let my batt run completely dead last night and fully charged over night. My iphone 4 is at 39% as in typing this. Last night was my 2nd full charged from zero battery and its definitely improved. Obviously takes a few run down & charged cycles before It reaches optimum performance. Happy now, was getting worried I'd be bringing my shiny new phone back.

Exactly what I needed to do with the 3gs.

You'll need to turn off a couple of things to ensure the performance settings of the phone suit you etc. I don't have push notifications/bluetooth on etc.

I never had a 3 so I can't compare but I got a 4 on Friday and it has spent more time on charge then off it.

Thats pretty standard at first with most people. Playing with it constantly over the first couple of days you'd be lucky to get a day out of it. When things settle down and you get into more consistent useage, you should find you get a lot better battery, especially turning off location services, bluetooth etc.

    Yeah that makes sense, thanks.

Superb battery life in comparison to my 3G. Easily a day, if I'm barely on it I could get in to the 2 days of life bracket.

One thing I've noticed is that it seems to use approx 20% overnight when it's sitting next to the bed in sleep mode. Wifi and bluetooth off. Is this just me?

Close the Mail app and other backgrounding apps overnight and you should see a improvement, i do this and have about 3-4% drop overnight.

iPhone noob question: how do I turn them off? :o

Simply touch and hold down the icon of the app you wish to close for a few seconds. The icons will then begin to shake, as they used to on the Home screen when deleting apps. In this case, there is also a red “-” symbol displayed at the top, left-hand corner of the icon. Tapping the “-” sign will immediately close the app.

I'm still confused about this one

Isn't that list supposed to show the most recent apps used????. I know when u want to multitask you double tap home and chose which app to open but it's still very unclear as to which are running and which are just 'recent' .

Can anyone clear this up for me or should I be constantly deleting all apps from this running/recent list menu????.

Surely a simple running icon above the app would have solved this???.

i keep my phone on 24/7.
    push every 30mins
    notiications on.
    bluetooth off.
wifi every now and again, but only when i want it on as such.
    3G always enabled
    sounds on
    vibrate on
bit of iPod use every day

i get at least 2 days with normal usuage and more with light useage.
tends to drop from 100% to 96% overnight while in bed.

I am having some issues with my new iPhone 4 battery.

It appears to be draining quite quickly even in stand by mode, I have notifications off, location services off, mail set to manual with push / fetch off...

I have completed one full battery drain and recharge and will try a few more to see if it improves. Also going to do a restore this weekend even though I hate doing that as it takes ages to load back songs etc.

I did set up as new on activation before loading music / apps / videos etc and have not downloaded any new apps... Also I close out all open apps on the Multi tasking tool bar to ensure nothing is running in the backgorund. Also running iOS 4.0.2

My old 3GS battery was far better than this... If continues, will send back to Apple...

yesterday my phone dropped 20% just sitting in my pocket for half an hour.

Not many app's "open" (maybe 5)
    bluetooth on but not connected
    wifi
    location
    3g
    instant push
full brightness but that shouldn't matter when its in my pocket

there was a good bit on in terms of conectivity, but 20% in 30 minutes seems a bit much. it dropped to 7% and i couldn't let it die that quick, so i turned the whole lot of, even cellular data, dropped the brightness to about 1/8 and the thing lasted for a good 2-3 hours... something isn't right there, especially considering kceire's usage and time it takes for the battery to drain.

I would set it up as a new phone (it came from a 3g) but there are texts in the backup that i cannot loose. any help with that would be great

I only have it a week, but my Battery life has been excellent in comparison to the 3GS.

Battery died completely at 15.00 today, 100% at 7am...

    Minimal use...not good...

My battery life is great on iPhone 4 also,
    Since this morning.
Usage : 3 hours 55 minutes (All calls and internet, mails etc. No Music)
    Standby: 9 Hours 20 minutes
    Battery percentage: 58% left

    Location service: Off
    Notification: Off
Email push: Manual ( check them every few minutes)
    Data Roaming :Off
    Wi-fi: Off
    3g: Off

I normally will have to charge 3gs by now.
if i keep 3g on then battery percentage would be around 46% by now.

I think my battery last longer than normal as i kill any mail app, maps, safari etc straight away after use, so in theory my multi task bar is always empty, it takes longer to launch app but i get my desired battery life.

So I did a restore on Sat morning, set up as new, did not load any music, movies or apps, just as the iPhone comes and used for a few hours.

The battery drain still occuring, 15 - 20% every hour when not in use and nothing running in the background.

So have a replacement on the way now, due to be delivered tomorrow, also signed up for Apple Care as I don't think this will be the last iPhone 4 issue.

Today I compared my iPhone 4 to a mate's in work, and his battery was way better, and we could see the drain on mine and no drain on his...

Hope replacement is all ok !

sounds like you have a faulty battery?
although a full charge after a complete run down is good for them so ive heard.

so keep an eye on the useage after this charge.

My iPhone battery is at least about 50%-75% better than the N900 and I'm a heavy user. N900 battery dies in about 4 hours or so after heavy usage/connected to 3G.

iPhone seems to be able to last me until about 6pm (from 7.30am) connected using 3G and heavy usage. (push notifications regularly fetching mail, browsing, downloads, ipod, the odd bit of sky sports and 3D gaming). So all in all, quite pleased!

Actually, I find myself with one bar from time to time, moreso than other phones (also I'm left handed).

It really only ever effects internet speed though , no dropped calls or problems sending texts.
