Just watching the athletics on RTE2,switched over to BBC and imo the picture on BBC is superior.I noticed this aswell during the World Cup.Is the bitrate on RTE lower? Even during the GAA games it sometimes looks like watching Lego men.

The bitrate of the BBC is the highest of all teh channels af far as I remember.

It's shocking at times on RTE-the sport really shows it up,especially field games like football etc.I suppose with the arrangement they have with Sky beggars can't be choosers.

I've always found PQ on RTÉ to be poor compared to some (not all) other channels. It was very noticeable today watching live GAA. I find BBC to be one of the best with both SD and HD PQ.

Try it on BBCHD and rte2.

The athletics looked pretty poor on RTÉ Two earlier. It is a shame as I considered them to have the best PQ on Sky a few years ago.

I did that also just to see what it really looks like. But to be fair I wanted to compare the SD channels, the athletics were on RTE2,BBC and EUROSPORT- RTE had by far the worst picture quality, they can't blame the source as they're all the same. People complained about picture quality on MSK but RTE isn't any better at times.

If you have a Mpeg 4 tuner in your Tv , an aerial and live within reach of a digital transmitter, tune in the digital terrestrial. You will see that the bit rate is significantly better than sky. And it's free!

RTÉ looked better than British Eurosport in fairness. That wouldn't be hard though.

It's also worth remembering that the bit rate changes all the time depending on the source material. I'd imagine that GAA is recorded on cameras that don't match what the premiership would have. Most channels also use a variable bit rate which changes depending on what's being shown not only on their channel but on other channels that share the same transponder. So if one channel is showing a slow paced sitcom it will have a lower bit rate than a channel showing sports.

All GAA feeds are HD and have been for some time. They may not be broadcasting as such but you can bet your granny that they will available from the archives and broadcast in repeat GAA programs when RTE launch in HD next year.

    Who's your inside source? :D

As was said above the RTE picture quality through the MPEG4 DVB-T tests is much better than through Sky.

RTÉ announced it a few weeks ago.

Are you sure? Why wasn't the rugby matches in Croke Park filmed in HD, they were the only matches of the 6 nations that weren't broadcast in HD on BBCHD like every other match?

"RTE2 HD Lite" will be on the Saorview(DTT) and Saorsat, I don't think it will be on SKY or UPC.

All Six Nations games from Croke Park were in HD this year.

LOL - but true. Where's the ball? Now imagine watching a hurling match!

RTÉ is still better than TV3 or 3e who a marginally worse.

Aside from sport which accentuates the poor RTÉ PQ, dramas and documentaries are not up the BBC standard which can be quite stunning for SD broadcasts.

Nice to hear that RTÉ are due to begin HD but disappointing to discover that it's not planned to be on the Sky platform

As for HD, I find Sky Sports, Sky 1HD, SBO HD, Eurosport HD and others quite good but ITV HD, while better than SD, is not up to scratch. I don't watch ITV HD all that often as it's an 'Other Channel'. Are there any plans to add it to the Irish EPG?

    No.

Move to digital Terrestrial TV, the bitrate for satellite on all Irish channels is around 3mbits where it 'bursts' much higher on DTT. Furthermore the likes of ITV are throttling their own SD sat channels back to around 3mbits to gradually force everyone to upgrade to HD, sneaky hoors :D

You watch sport?? Go HD or Terrestrial.
