Was he not light-middleweight and middleweight champion at the same time and therefore had to give up one of them?

He gave it up to fight for the prestigious million dollar belt!!!
Ah no, im not 100% sure cause i dont pay too much attention when a fighter gets stripped anymore but usually its cause the governing body in question can make more from sanctioning fees by forcing mandatories etc to keep the cash coming in. I think the wbo gave him like 10 mins to decide whether he wanted to fight at 154 or 160, and as he needed more time to decide they stripped him. Now fair enough the wbc gave him that option which is understandable but it wasnt the wbo's place imo.
By right he should own the ring, wbc, wbo, wba, and ibf belts if the other orgs hadnt stripped the linear champs along the way. Hopkins unified the titles but by the time the linear championship got to pavlik it was just the wbo and wbc.
