Yet another rules query?

Players A and B hit ball in same direction and end up maybe 40 yards from green (2nd shots on par 5) with roughly 10 yards between balls.

Player A walks up to first ball and plays it onto green.

Player B walks over to next ball but only then notices that its not his ball.

Then it dawns on player A that he has played the ball of B.

    What should then happen?

Player A is penalised 2 strokes for playing the wrong ball and must replace player B's ball and then play his own ball as normal.

Was thinking that might be it alright. So player B has he's ball replaced and no penalty.

Yes no penalty for player B, the only thing I'm unsure about is if player A must drop or place player b's ball when replacing it, afaik it's drop.

Just checked it there now and it says the owner of the ball (player A in your example) is allowed to place the ball.

cant be in the same spot can it?? the reason i wonder is that having taken the shot a divot would have been taken and the lie would not be as good as previous.

Unless the shot was duffed, the divot would not be in the spot where the ball originally lay ;)
