Claiming motor tax back?

I have a car that was crashed last December that I'm approaching the final stages of repair and want to put it back on the road.

The car is currently taxed - but since its been off the road for 7 months, is there any way I can either get a refund of that part of the tax period, or have the tax extended?

    Thanks

    Andy.

AFAIK already elapsed tax can never be claimed back.

    You are quite correct.

In any event a refund would only issue if the car was destroyed.

There are other circumstances too, but none of them apply in the OP's case.

    http://www.environ.ie/en/LocalGovernment/MotorTax/Refunds/
    • The vehicle has been scrapped/destroyed* or sent permanently out of the state,
    • The vehicle has been stolen and has not been recovered by the owner,
    • A vehicle in respect of which a tax disc has been taken out has not been used in a public place at any time since the issue of the disc,
    • The owner of the vehicle has ceased, because of illness, injury or other physical disability, to use the vehicle,
    • The owner of the vehicle has ceased, because of absence from the state for business or educational purposes, to use the vehicle,
    • The owner of the vehicle has ceased, because of service overseas with the Defence Forces, to use the vehicle.

    This applies, doesn't it?

Only if it was never used on the road while the tax disc you speak of was on it, so unless you taxed it after crashing it I don't see how this applies.

If you did tax a car, but then subsequently did not use it in a public place, do you have to go to the local tax office to get a refund processed? I see on the form you need to have the VLC-so I presume you need to present it in person rather than post it?

I posted mine when I scrapped a car a few years ago. It took an age to get the refund.
