    Hi,

Didn't know about this forum until someone kindly pointed it out, hopefully some of you might be able to offer some advice. I got a Boss Micro-BR 4 track recently, it's great and everything but I'm a bit lost when it comes to the mixing and mastering side of things. Does anyone here have experience of using them and maybe have some pointers?

I've recorded a small amount of stuff so far and it sounds ok, but only ok and I'd like to get better and brushing it up. There's a link in my to sig to what I've done so far.

    Cheers,

    Ela

hmm... Well, I would say that it's gonna be pretty hard to get a really pro-sound using it, either in a mixing or mastering sense. You certainly couldn't master the recordings in any real way because so many necessary tools (such as multi-band compression) won't be available in that box.

I hate to advise changing horses mid- stream, but if you wanna progress beyond demo recordin you'd prolly need a computer of some description.

    IMO.

Someone else may know this recorder a bit better and be able to prove me wrong. :)

    I like your stuff though.

There's a nice vibe on those recordings. You have the performance down really well, that's the hard part! The mixing is easy by comparison. :)

On the first one, you might consider editing the vocals a bit, by combining the best of the two takes into one good one. And pan it centrally.

Alternatively, go to town on the panning thing and just sing the words more clearly when it's a different line on either side. In other words, make a feature of it.

You've got a nice guitar sound on the first one, but there's room for improvement. The second track appears to be a better mic position, but I would try some different picks to reduce the clackiness on the attack. The vocal has a lot of spit noise between the words, and some popping (from your breath hitting the mic) which is a bit distracting.

Cheers lads. Madtheory, I've gone with the 'go to town on the panning' idea on a re-recording of 'Green and Blue'. Have also took onboard the popping/spit noise thing so sang further away from the mic, hopefully it makes a difference.

Curious if anyone has the Micro-BR though, I'm always discovering new things that it can do, be great to get some pointers. Certainly well worth €180 :)

    Hi Ela,

There are loads of tutorials on youtube for this thing.
    Here's one.

Is that mix on your soundcloud? I thought the first few were a little noisy, so standing further away means more gain, and even more noise. A pop shield and a glass of water might be a more elegant solution.

Yeah they're all up on soundcloud. Have changed the files though so they're different versions of the same songs. Definitely need to get a pop shield, milan panic said the same to me a few days ago, flat broke at the minute though. Will get one and a good mic (I'm only using the inbuilt one now) as soon as I can.
