This is a snap of U.S. Route 101 (US 101) in California. The surface is sometimes worse than this. Made me feel grateful for the NRA (not Charlton Heston's mob).

One thing is that surface could be up to 70 years old, the asphalt concrete used by the NRA will undriveable after 20 at best. Already been extensive patchwork on the heavily used sections of the early M4 here, opened in 93/94.

Even the new section of M4 has been patched up. Before the Enfield off ramp and after Enfield going westbound there have been large sections of tarmac patched.

Most of that was down to being laid badly to begin with, it was relaid within months of opening.

It SHOULD last another 15 years or so now, but its irrelevant to the tax payer if it does or not - the road has to be handed back in 2032 with at worst a ten year old surface on it anyway.
