Am starting this course in September and would appreciate some feedback from anyone who has previously done it. Its an evening course, twice a week, 7 to 10 for five weeks.

I did the day time PC Maintenance course and it was grand. The teacher we had was a bit of a waster who liked leaving the room hours at a time sometimes but thats FAS for ya. You'll be taught how to clean a computer, how to remove and install parts and learn a bit about the history of computers. It was okay and will probably be useful to you.

Ta Dean,I presume, when you say cleaning, you mean diagnostics, system defrag and restore and not with a soft cloth and vacuum cleaner:D Is there a lot of practical(hands on) or is it mainly theory.

I hope it is hardware cleaning with air. Cloth is rarely a good option.
Air really is all you need to clean dust.
Yes, knowing how to clean hardware is very useful.

Yep, I meant cleaning the hardware with cans of air. You also learn about system defrag and stuff, too. Its both practical and theory. For the practical test - we had to set up a printer, remove and install different components, transfer files over a server, basic stuff like that. The theory test is very do-able if you go over it well enough.

    Hi punk77

I finished the pc maintenance evening course in FAS Galway in June 2010. The programme content consists of: 1.Installing and configuring hardware 2.Installing and configuring software 3.Installing and configuring peripheral equipment 4.System troubleshooting 5.Internet & Explorer troubleshooting 6.Introduction to Networks 7.Preventative maintenance 8.Anti-Virus Protection

If you have your own computer or laptop and have some bit of a clue, this course is great. I'm not great on computers although i'm not totally illiterate either. I felt a little dumb on occasion but was never left behind.

J.P. is yer man to talk to in Mervue. He knows his stuff and if he doesn't know he wont bullsh*t you. He'll go to the effort of finding out!!!

I'd advise anybody I know to do this course.

Hope this helps you in someway :)

    No worries,

No there are no exams on the evening course. At the end you get a certificate of attendance that's it.

You get to take apart a pc and a laptop (there is only one laptop to play with but you can go in early some evening and check it out yourself).

We went through printers, networking, system defrag etc. Basically how to speed up your computer and protect it from viruses etc.

I found it very informative, hope its what you're lookin for.

Oh and if you are in receipt of ANY social welfare allowance you can get the course for FREE! as long as you register before the open evening.

Does it teach how to repair a broken pc and laptop and does it offer
    any proper recognised certification?
Would doing the course help someone trying to get a job?
