Silence

Is there anyone here who can say they have a completely silent (0db) HTPC (with a minimum of 1 tuner card for arguments sake).

In my HTPC I've reduced the number of fans down to two 120mm and one 80cm cpu fan.

I modified the 120mm PSU fan down to 5volts, and the 120mm case fan is reduced down to 40% (552rpm) using speedfan.

The 80mm CPU fan is actually a case fan which I have mounted onto a good quality heat sink, this runs at a minimum of around 50% (1000rpm).

These 3 fans now are almost inaudible (and yield decent temps), and definitely inaudible when the HTPC is at a distance under the TV and the volume of the TV is anything above mute.

The biggest source of noise now is the hard drive. When choosing the parts for the HTPC I got a 3.5in WD Caviar Green 500GB, but I was very disappointed to find that is actually very loud (high pitched noise more than anything else).

I bought a hard drive silencer caddy off of ebay to try and dampen it down, which it has, but it is still the one area that makes the most noise.

I think it is acceptably quiet now to use it full time but I will always focus in on the slight hum in the quiet parts of a movie / tv.

I suppose I could splash out for a decent sized SSD but I am feed up at this stage of putting money into the damned thing.

Get a small SSD and load your OS on that, then you can use a samsung or something as your data drive. One thing you should really do is get some bungee cord and suspend the drive, this isolates it from the case and gets rid of that hum.

I have a pair of seagates in raid1 and you only hear them on spin up.

What kind of case do you have? is there a 5.25" slot free? look at post 6 here:

The hard drive silencer caddy fits into a 5.25" bay so I cannot suspend it unless I take the drive out, but when the drive is out the high pitch sound will be back.

I have a hard drive suspended in my desktop using some bicycle tyre inner tubbing which works very well.
