    Hi
I connected a uhf and vhf aerial in an attic in kilkenny today to receive rte1,2 tv3 and tnag , now when i tuned in tv i also got extra channels such as mtv , setanta, bbc, disc real time and about 10 more, apologies if this is a silly question but is it normal to pick up such channels on an aerial and where are they coming from

You might be picking up a rogue signal from a nearby dish. Just enjoy it while you can, for free:D

That sounds like you're picking up signals bleeding from a UPC (Ex Chorus) MMDS antenna near your house.

UPC MMDS in ex Chorus areas uses DVB-T and MPEG2 (i.e. same as UK Freeview). It's broadcast at microwave frequencies and down-converted in a box on the antenna to normal digital terrestrial television type frequencies. Their box is just a DTT box with custom software and a decoder.

It's possible you're picking up unencrypted channels that are bleeding from your neighbour's MMDS dish.

Setanta is most definitely one of their exclusives!

You *could* complain to your neighbour and ask them to fix their wonkey equipment :D

Thanks for replys, would this stray signal not need to go through a chorus box to be decoded?

some channels are broadcast unencrypted, thus don't need to go thru the box.
I'd just enjoy it while you can

    Kilkenny city is cabled.
Sounds like pickup of leakage of analogue cable channels. Cable outside house is probably just a few feet from your aerial. The leakage may be interfering with your RTE 1 and 2 as they are on VHF Band 3 in your area (from Mt Leinster) , in bandwidth cable likely uses as well. You could contact the cable comapny about the leakage :)
