i've been using their mobile broadband service since may 2007 but i want to get out of it now and go with upc.i rang last september to cancel and the bleedin hassle i had,i got a new modem from them the previous feb and the cute fcukers classed it as a new 12 month contract so they told me i'd have to pay an 85 euro penalty for cancelling early.
had no choice but to stay with them and as a sweetner they offered me their latest modem, the person i was talking to assured me that it wouldn't be a new 12 month contract but i had/have my doubts.
anyway, even if it is a new 12 month contract it's nearly up now.i just want to get away from them with the minimum of fuss,i'm in no humour of going through all the same crap i went through last year.
what is the best approach to take when trying to cancel with 3?

every new modem comes with a new contract unfortunatly..85 euro to get out of contract is better than what you could have been ripped over 200 euro or more..as soon as your contract is up tell them you want to cancel and cancel direct debits to them also

In fairness the service has been decent enough since I got the new modem,I just want to switch to upc cos they have better deals..

Did they tell you that a new modem would extend your contract by xx months at the time ??

If not there is no contract and minimum notice ( 28 or 30 days notice) applies. If they assert otherwise then ask for a copy of the recording they must keep of contract negotiations as explained in this thread on complaints and distance selling.

Thanks spongebob.at the time the guy on the phone assured me it wouldn't be a new 12 month contract if I went with the new modem.
I got it mid September 2009 so i'll just wait another couple of weeks and give them the 28-30 days notice of my intention to cancel..

I am thinking something similar. Getting three until upc comes available in my area. it could be anything from 4 - 6 months... maybe even a year!!
i was looking at getting their wireless router.
would it be a pain to cancel during the contract?
is there a cooling off period if i get it and just dont like it?

    cheers

The wireless router would be the best, it's quicker than the rest of the modems, the reception seems to be very good on it.
It's easy cancel during the contract but you have to buy your way out of it, it's a bit pointless buying out of it your better off just keeping the contract until it runs it's term and get some use out of it. Minimum contract is 12mts.

If it's no good you've 14days to give it back.

remember also if your service levels and speeds deterioate drop below reasonable levels like to dial up speeds most of the time you will also have to be allowed out of contract as three(or any company) will be deemed to be failing to provide the service. this can happen at any time during the contract not just within the 7/14day trial period.

you would need to provide evidence of poor speeds and try to troubleshoot with the provider and may need to get in touch with ComReg if this happens, it is not really a get out clause unless the service gets seriously worse.

i rang up today to cancel and i was offered free internet for 2 months, they said it wasn't part of a new contract,it was just a goodwill gesture for customers who are with them over 1 year.
i reluctantly accepted but i assured the girl that i would be still definitely cancelling and she said that was fine,i just have to ring up in 2 months time and tell them.
they better not tell me in 2 months time that i have entered a new contract..

no you've got 2 free months that deal is common enough for people leaving. I wouldn't be suspicious of it, there just hoping you'll stay after the 2mts.

the 1st fella i spoke to in bombai said i'd have to give 30 days notice but the other girl never mentioned this, she just said to ring up in a couple of months time.
going to make sure i ring them 30 days before my free 2 months expire..

No matter what you have accepted you need to give 30 days notice to leave
