Rattling noise from engine

I have an 03 toyota yaris, when stopped or driving slowly there is a rattle coming from the engine. Dont know if it happens when driving fast because the noise of the engine might drown it out. Have looked about the net and people seem to say it could be the timing chain but the car has only 70k miles on it so shouldnt be that. Anyone have any experience with this problem and how much would it be to fix

Get that checked asap , they're well known for doing water pumps and over heating. If it pisses all the water out then then engine wiill be fu&*ed. Down to your mechanic today is my advice ;)

would that cause the rattle noise as well? hope its not the timing chain.

Depends! It really could be anything but any engine with a rattle coming from it shouldn't be driven. If something is broken now then its only gonna get worse.

Could be something as simple as a loose heat shield or it could be a warning of something more serious. Get it checked out anyways.

Yeah id tend to agree with the other poster about the timing chain, that or big end bearings ether way best to get it checked asap as both can cause alot of damage!

Keep an eye on the temp and coolant level.

It does if you checked it properly. If not then it may well be worth more as paper for kids to draw on.

Brought mine to the mechanic there on monday, it is the timing chain  getting it done up home in the north and its costing £156 for the parts (new chain and tensioner kit) and he said around £100 to £150 for the labour. Have read on here thats its a big job to change one so I was expecting it to be much dearer so im happy enough with £300 for the lot. Read a post somewhere saying they took it to toyota garage and it cost 700 euro so dont do that!
