Advice about Marathon training on holidays

    Hiya everyone. I posted here before about training for Dublin Marathon but had a big setback (month long chest and sinus infection) and I've only really recovered in last week or so. Running 10 miles tomorrow so I'm not too far off my intended long run for this week. (12 miles). Following around 80 % of Hal Higdons novice marathon runner program.

    Anyway my main problem is I'm heading to Porto, Lisbon and Tarragona for two weeks from next Monday and I can't really take much time out of my training schedule due to the chest infection. So what does anyone do when they're away on holidays?? Try to find training routes using mapmyrun or something?? I don't know any of these cities at all so I wouldn't be comfortable running streets I don't know. Even some plan to keep up fitnes ready to resume training when I get back would. Any advice for keeping my training up whiel on holiday woudl be helpful :D

    Ah just run. Stick on your runners and head out the hotel door (early mornings I'd suggest in those locations.) Stick a street map down the back of your shorts. If you've got a Garmin set up the Return to Start function so you can't get lost. You'll probably find a convenient straight road or shoreline that you can head out and back.

    It's one of the best things about being away from home, getting out and running in new places.

    If you're female you'll be fine if you run in the mornings.

    Write down the name and address of your hotel, €20 taxi fare back should you need it, and get out and run. Everyone's training suffers a bit when they're on hols, but if you've missed a fair amount of training already through illness, then its just really up to you how much more you feel you can miss. Early morning runs are great to clear the head from the night before, and its cooler then. I found when in France, if I tried to wait for the cool evening to get my run in, a cork had already found its way from a bottle, so the run was missed. Getting the runs in just after dawn, set me up for the day, and left me with some of the best memories of the holiday.

    But above all, remember life is for living, and you're on holidays!:D

    Thanks to both of ya's for your replies :D. The early morning run and the taxi fare are both good ideas ;). I will be enjoying my holiday as well of course but the runs might be handy for clearing the head :p.

    Running on holidays is one of the best things you can do with your time (and something I'm really looking forward to doing in a couple of weeks time). Couple of things to bear in mind though:

    1) Head to the coast, find a landmark and run in one direction. Then run back the way you came. Very hard to get lost that way.
    2) Don't expect to follow your existing plan. Distances and pace will both suffer in the hot weather
    3) Try to get some water/hydration every 30 minutes (particularly when hungover!)
    4) Sun-screen!
    5) Drivers - watch out for them! While you can run relatively safely in the hard shoulder in Ireland, driving in Spain / Portugal tends towards the slightly more reckless! Stay away from roads which don't have paths.
