How do I stop apps backgrounding?

Everytime I hit the home button to quit an app, it ends up multitasking in the background and I have to delete it from the backgrounded apps list. Is there any way to quit an app normally by hitting the home button?

I don't think it can be done without jailbreaking:(

Only thing about the iPhone4 I don't like so far.

Every time you leave a app, you quit it. The double-tap taskbar isn't backgrounded apps, its recently used app.

There's no need to quit the app. When it's in "backgrounded list", it's not working the background except in certain exceptions (music, downloading, etc.). In most cases, the app is simply closed but then relaunches to where it was when you exited it.

Ah, I the apps were running in the background and they increased battery consumption. It's not so bad then.

    This...but!

If you are using a sat nav like Navigon, Tom Tom and such and arrive at your destination, make sure you cancel navigation before you end the app. Otherwise it will remain in the background draining battery.

Skype-If you log on and then exit out by pressing the home button it will remain in the background draining the battery. That's fine if you want to remain logged on and receive calls and message through Skype.

If you don't you need to either log off or end the app in the recent apps dock.

    This is very important.

You can tell the GPS app is "backgrounding" if the compass arrow indicator is shown in top right corner, beside battery level indicator. Same place you see the music/vidoe playing indicator.

This is handy where sometimes you *want* the GPS app to keep logging your trail, but find out the app is not iOS4 compatible for backgrounding.
