ok need a bit of advice please

purchased a 1995 transit dropside but the key was well wore and ignition barrel probably wore too. but would always release the steering lock and start but today it would not..

i have tried and tried for ages moving it this way and that but no luck getting the steering lock off let alone getting it started...
worst of all its sort of in the road where its parked and really need to get it shifted..
i cant remove the barrel as think i would have to get it turns to ignition 2
anyone any idea on something that would work quickly

    thanks

well if it is really urgent, and key defo doesnt work...
( have you tried a spray of WD40 into lock?)

other than that break the steering lock... at least you could push her off the road

yeh those keys and barrells give alot of trouble when worn.have you tried rock the steering wheel and jiggle the key at the same time ? i know there not great descriptions but its the only way i can describe how to do it.failing that youll have to get it drilled out because the barrell release pin can only be moved when the key is in position 1. if you can get it to turn and pop the barrell out, if you strip it down (the barrell) and pull the pin out any key will work, but who'll know;)

yes tried wd40 mate but no use
will only break steering lock as last resort, was working ok yesterday can budge it today at all
tried for nearly hour jigging it about and no luck
could i drill this out myself
was also thinking removing the complete steering lock and bringing it to locksmith but not sure how to do this and would it work or is removing this a big job

yeh you can drill it yourself, but as a long term fix youll have to put in a new barrell. youll need a big drill bit maybe a 10mm.

ok where exactly do i drill on the lock/barrell --thanks

straight down the key slot and when you dont see anymore metal filings coming out you need to rotate the drill in circular motions, the idea being you want to collapse the internal tublers.bare in mind this is quite labour intensive, the oull arms get a bit tired

If you strip off the steering column trims, the actual switch part will separate easily, its held on with two plastic clips.

A screwdriver will operate the switch once its removed.

ok last resort i had to drill it, using a 10mm bit, ive drilled in about 3 inches,
barrell still firmly in place, do i need to drill further to get the barrel out, need to ask as dont want to do damage by drilling too far

damn i went too far and damaged the lock itself- cant even get it started with screwdriver now,
will turn to positions but wont start it....

    Not Your Ornery Onager

Did you get any plastic bits coming out at the end of your drilling? You may have hit the ignition switch.

    hi

i had to remove complete ignition lock and unscrew the 2 little screws that release the switch itself has just wnet slightly in with drill but when i turn it round with screwdriver the battery light comes on dash etc but nothing happens-not a kick,

on the switch there are 3 thick soldered wires and 2 thin ones in the centre
can any these be crossed to start it-i tried to cross 2 of them but again nothing

ok i opened the injectors and when i cross the starter there is no diesel coming so i think its lost the signal to open the pump hence why not starting -anyone know anything about this

I'm making a few assumptions (don't know about Transits), but did you have the key inside/nearby the ignition barrel so that the immobilizer can talk to it?
