Rules Question - Stance affected by hazard

Today I had the situation arise that led to this question.

I drove my ball off the tee and it came to rest BESIDE, not in the lateral water hazard. In order to take my stance I would have had to stand in the water(hazard).
Before I say what I did I would like some of you that know the rules better than I to judge it for me, please!
    Thanks all,

    MG.

Play the ball as it lies or take a drop under penalty

Play the ball as it lies. Once the ball is outside the hazard you have to play it as it lies, regardless of this making you stand in the hazard or not.
Of course, you could always have the option of declaring it unplayable and using that rule to drop it under penalty (1 shot) either within 2 clubs (not nearer the hole), or keep the original lie and the flag in line and go back as far as you like or thirdly return to where you hit the previous shot from and drop there.
You also could have just chipped out backwards or sideways away from the hole and you probably wouldn't have been standing in the hazard???

Or you could also do what mollinari done yesterday.. flip the club and play it left handed, he made it look easy!

Although I think I'd be goin for the penalty drop myself ha!
