Bit of a riduculous question but this is the first time i've done a webcam interview - I presume treat it in the same way as a normal face to face interview and go with a suit ?

Personally, I wouldn't (having been on and conducted such interviews) - especially if you're doing it from home. It just looks odd. Smart casual is the name of the game.

That said, without knowing the company and the environment/attitude they work with it's hard to judge. Have you asked the HR department?

A nice, clean, pressed shirt would be your best bet, maybe throw a tie on for good measure. I wouldn't say a suit would be needed unless it was a large conference type interview where you would be on a large screen in a board room and more then one person was interviewing you.

Just don't wear something like this :p

    Good luck!

Definitely a shirt and tie. It's a formal interview, even if it is done online. Do you mind me asking who the company is? Web interviewing is quite new and it's interesting to see what sort of companies are using it and whether it will become common place.

Make sure that you have a clean and neutral background.

Aren't you expected to strip off and masturbate during these type of interviews?

    WTF?

First time I've ever heard of such a thing. Is it a proper company or a bit of a mickey mouse operation? I can't see a large, legitimate company not having face to face interviews.

don't wear anything too 'busy' or stripey, or too colourful (if you're a girl). That lovely purple and green striped top will turn into a migraine trigger through a video cam, believe me ;-)

Try not to wear a too-white shirt either, it might be too glary (or our VC cams are just crap, could also be the case...Just keep the colours muted would be my advice...;-))

Unless this is for a position overseas or you have a contagious disease, I cant see why it cannot be done in person (or even over the phone). You will be in your own home so I would not wear a suit, but I would still dress smart.

Did a few before for positions overseas. Dressed as I would for a normal interview, suit and tie, and was offered the the parts. At the end of each interview the interviewer commented on how nice it was to see someone who dressed the part.

I had one of these during the week in the company's offices (but 2 of the interviewers were abroad).

Went in in a suit as normal and it went well I thought, and on my way out I got the impression from the 3rd guy that I may have a good chance.

I was wrong though.. I'm starting to think that you've a better chance of winning the lotto than getting a job (in IT) at the minute :(

It's large multinational companies who usually do these types of interviews, at least for the first/preliminary interview. They want someone from their own headquarters vetting candidates.

Anyway OP the answer is simple, wear what you would to a face-to-face interview. I would recommend a suit.

Also as qwertz and galah said make sure the background is appropriate and check the picture quality of your webcam. Probably a good idea to check the hardware and software you'll be using if you don't use it regularly.
