Starcraft LAN in Dublin for all skill levels

    Hi all,

Just thought I'd post this here as the thread organising this is in general strategy chat.

A couple of us are planning a get together in Dublin 1 or 2 this coming Monday (and possibly more times after this). The plan is to go have the chats and eats in a venue such as a bar or cafe that will give us access to a plug socket. Right now the ideas are a Starbucks, or The POrterhouse Central. All ideas for D1+2 are welcome though.

Also if you have a laptop+the game+ethernet cable, you can hook into the LAN port for a few games with people there. I'll be bringing an 8 port LAN hub and a power strip.

I've never played Starcraft. So needless to say I'll be ****e. So all skill levels are welcome. Us noobs can use it to learn how to play the game.

So, is anybody up for joining us?

A good idea but you might find it a struggle get people

    A) to commit
    B) To feel comfortable playing lan in a pub/cafe

The advent of broadband here makes it as easy to stay in the comfort of home and play with each other.

I'd say youd probably get some more success organising some discussing evenings, encouraging some discussion on threads here and organising some games.

IRC for the time being is a solid bet to get the ball rolling for discussion.

When the SC2 channels are open, I assume it will be like warcraft, where you can set up a private channel, set one up for irish players, there you can have live chat and discussions as well as organising games on the spot.

Cant say I'd be interested in a meet up, but an idea like the above would greatly interest me.

There seems to be a big enough buzz nationally for this game and its a great opportunity. And it might be time for us to take a different approach to an online game for once.

We all know how the coutner strike community was here, for the most part egotistical, boiyz noize and willy wagging. It was very much us against them, inraverted and hostile.

There was some good Wc3 players in this country, but again the community was small, but instead of pooling together with knowledge and resources, everyone kept to themselves for self gain. And when it came to the big events, WC3l, Clanbase etc, every irish player fell flat on their face.

Theres an opportunity here to be a bit more mature and develop a foundation to build on. Sharing information ideas etc to better everyone, not just ourselves.

Yeah so you might share your build, and a boards cup comes about and everyone knows what your going to do, thats not the point. With sharing experience and ideas, it develops peoples games to create strong 2v2,3v3 and 4v4 teams aswell as helping players advance online in the leagues etc.

I cant help but feel reserve at how a SC2 community might fall into the dark hole that pretty much any community game in this country so far has fallen into, but with a big release like this you cant help promote change in idea and how we operate towards each other, and who knows maybe we might actually get a stable community thats worthwhile getting involved in.

    A. Not really looking for numbers. Even with just two of us it's worth it for me as I prefer LAN play over internet everytime. But none of my friends are into strategy gaming. Plus I just like to get out and about. I spend enough time at home as it is with a home office.

    B. It'll be early in the day so most likely will have a big section to ourselves. I've done it before in the past with my laptop and found it very comfortable indeed. Ordering a pint and chips to your table while you play/browse is pretty nice :)

I do agree the online side of it is a great tool to build a community. But what we're trying to do here is not really build a community so to speak. More of a chance for like minded people to get a chance to play some games and get out of the house for a few hours.

Sure even if you're not playing, you can just have something to eat/a pint and watch others play while giving them tips/learning from them.

Just a social activity to break up my normal activity with my mates of football-booze-football-booze-football-booze...you get the idea... :D

My partner just about deals with me raiding late nights in wow, if I tell her I'm going to the bar to play Starcraft, its not that she will get fishy and think I'm doing the dirt...

She will just be so disappointed that she knows I'm genuinely going to a bar to play video games, and not do the dirt :)

Absolutely zero LAN play? You have to go via internet? That's only slightly ridiculous. Can be dealt with. But ridiculous.

Well it's more of a get together, so yea come along with no laptop. I'll be bringing my laptop so I can get some hands on tips and a LAN game if anybody wants to/we can.
