I'm setting up a small (part-time) business to make some extra cash. I will be advertising in papers and websites around the country. Products will be sent to the customers. Therefore the will be no direct contact between me and the customer. Hence, Im looking for ways that payments can be made. Postal Order is an obvious one but I'd like to be able to accept payments over the phone. What is the best and (more importantly) cheapest way of done this?

Have you a website online for this business? Could you set up a PayPal business account and accept payments through PayPal as it is secure and you are charged a low percentage on a transaction basis rather than a monthly basis

No I dont have a website, I just plan on using sites such as DoneDeal and the Buy&Sell. So what options would I be left with?

Hmm I'm not entirely sure but I don't think you can accept payments via Paypal over the phone. I do think you can accept telephone payments with a Merchant Banking account though, you'll have to talk to your bank about setting one up and to get quotes on the charges that will apply. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Paypal offer a "Virtual Terminal" service, customer rings, you enter payment details into paypal, they take money from your customer. Paypal don't accept Laser cards, this could be an issue.

Speak to Realex (www.realex.ie), I'm fairly sure they offer a similar service, and they accept Laser.

Otherwise, talk to your bank about getting a Business Account with a Merchant Agreement, and get your own machine.

    Hi,

I tried to get a virtual terminal from Paypal but AFIK, it appears that you can only get them in the UK.

The fact that I could not process Laser was a big problem ( I find a lot of people are using Laser instead of putting it on the credit card)

I went to Sagepay and it costs me 15.00 per month to be able to process paymets including Laser over the telephone, however you have to key in the information which involves contact with the customer.

You will need merchant account for this and there is a percentage charge per transactions payable to the Merchant ( eg Elavon )

    Good luck with it

    Aidan
