blown out of proportion by apple haters in my opinion.
ive been posting for a week stating that i havent had one call dropped or reception fail even using the death grip.

ive actually noticed an increase in signal strenght at home and more time spent in 3G coverage, although that could be a network update from metoer or something.

Problem does exist. Cup the phone and it goes to 'no service'. Only does it in areas with a low signal to begin with, other phones I have had(including the 3g and 3gs) do not have this issue.

In areas with a good signal, there is no real issue.

No problems with signal on mine. It was probably just down to the fact that Americans have such fat fingers!

Have mine since nine this morning.
In places I know signal is average its very good, but at home where signal is 1 to 3 bars max, it reads 5 but with death grip can get it down to zero in about 6 seconds.

For the life of me can't understand how someone buys a €700 phone (be it on contract or payg) and not buy a case for it...are they fúckin stupid or something...
as I said to the mates..it's simple..buy a bloody case and you won't have the issue!!!!!

If you're paying €700 for a phone you shouldn't have any issues with it in the first place.

Maybe some people look after their phones?

I had a leather slip case, so it was protected when in my pocket etc, I dont need a big ugly rubber bumper on my phone in order to be able to make a call...oh wait...

Already posted in another 3 thread (sorry mods) but I'm desperate here:D

Need a bit of help here lads, gf got ip4 on three today and her reception is awful. Shes been in south dublin and is now in the city centre. Phone is displaying full bars on 3G.

I've been ringing her from my mobile and landline, with both the reception sucks. It's cutting out etc and we can barely hear each other.

Tried the airplane mode on/off trick, still no better. Anyone have any ideas before I take it back to the store for a refund? Please?

and no, she is not holding it in that special way!!!

    Christ on a bikeeek.gif

False alarm folks, just had gf on the phone (again). Turns out she still had the plactic cover on the phoneeek.gifeek.gifeek.gifeek.gifeek.gif! So it was covering the mic and speaker, therefore I couldn't hear her and she couldn't hear me!!

    Wasted on her, absolutley wasted.

So no reception problem, absolutley crystal clear!

    Sorry 3!tongue.gif

have tried the death grip can't get it to no service. have changed from o 2 to vodafone some difference constant 3G

the signal on my iPhone 4 is much better than my 3GS, I tried the death grip and the bar's will drop a little but not completely. On the other hand on my 3GS if it was on my desk or a table I had good coverage and as soon as I picked it up it was searching.... The WIFI is also vastly improved IMHO..... I live in a area with no 3G coverage BTW so I can say I am pretty happy. This is also without any covers....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,683 ✭✭✭✭Owen

Death grip has no effect here either.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 465 ✭✭cramp

    Definitely an issue with mine!!!
goes down to zero bars... mostly if held in left hand....then goes to full strength when left out of hands...........on VF network

    cramp

Honestly, who has ever held a phone the way you need to, to create this? I cant recreate it myself, I'm on vodafone and have tried to in many places.

The problem is there, that's a fact, but it totally depends on where you live, or where you mostly use the phone.

The problem is only noticeable in areas with poor coverage. I know all phone suffer from some amount of signal loss when picked up, but this problem is magnified on the iph4 due to the poor design of the arial.

Apple obviously won't admit to a design flaw but you can be sure, come next June, the next iPhone won't be an iph4 with just some upgraded internals, I'll bet you what you like the hardware will be modified to sort out it's current flaw. This could be a new design, or more likely, an internal insulation strip of some kind.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,499 ✭✭✭IamMetaldave

I see your point dude, but as an example, one I have given before in this topic of discussion, I had a 3G before my iP4 and in my local boozer I had terrible reception. When I got my new phone I had signal in parts of the bat where on my 3G I previously had no service.

Also, I don't think they'll change the design too much, maybe put some non conductive seal over the edge. Some ppl believe they are doing this already with phones that shipped after week 25.

Sounds like the sim isn't set up right with Vodafone.

Just like the people who buy a new car or sofa and leave the plastic on the seats... whats the point? A case is only hiding the phone and the case will get scratched at some point as well, do you replace the case every time it gets a few scratches?

I've been attempting the Death Grip all day, no loss at any time. Also kept checking 3g signal as we drove from Inchicore to IKEA today, only time it went was inside IKEA store.

noon issue with me aswell on 3. i do get less bars in the house than on my sony, but even on one bar no distortion on voice. i have to say its great phone and my first iphone. happy days : )

The Death Grip works for me, consistently, over the course of about 30 secs.

I'm in an area of poor coverage anyway, 2 bars max, and I'm left handed. When I hold it in 'that' way, it goes down to one, then 3G goes, then no bars, then searching....then No Services.

For whatever reason, I don't usually hold it in my left hand when making a call, so no dropped calls or anything like that. Not going to be an issue in practice, definitely getting a case though.

I am in south dublin. 3G signal on my iphone 4 on three is not great here. it is dropping to 1 bar the moment I swith to 3g, It is also going off the network most of the time. Is it happening anyone on three network? I have no problem in normal calls. I also checked in Liffey valley last night, same issue. going off the network most of the time when I try any 3G services like safari, running any app.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,324 ✭✭✭chrislad

The 'grip' does reduce my signal by about 2 bars. I've never gone to No Service, and I've had no problems with call quality or dropping calls around both Clonmel and Limerick City.

    Edit: On O2.

I can't get 3G on a new iPhone 4 at home in Dublin 6 area.

The iPhone 4 works fine on calls and with WiFi, although the signal strength bars vary widely, even in the same location within the house. I haven't yet had a chance to try the phone in other geographical locations.

But if I turn off WiFi I have no indication of 3G at all (it worked fine with iPhone 3G with my previous provider, O2).

I did see '3G' pop up briefly on the menu bar, and was able to download some email, but then it disappeared. It reappeared once or twice since, but literally for seconds. I thought the 3G network must be down so I called 3 tech support, and they confirmed that all the multiple towers in my area were up and running. They claim to have real-time info on the cell tower status. They also said that I should have either '3G' or nothing - no 'E' as in the case of O2 when the network goes to lower speed.

They weren't particularly familiar with the iPhone 4, but ran through a few issues, and eventually persuaded me to 'Reset All Settings'. It didn't help.

Anyone in Rathmines/Rathgar area getting reliable 3G on iPhone 4? Any suggestions? Thanks.

I thought the same before I got my iphone 4. That I probably wouldn't hold the phone like that in everyday use. I wouldn't when making calls (and haven't had any dropped calls thankfully) but when texting or using safari i'd hold the phone like that.

The signal isn't too great in my house and I can make the phone go down to No Service when I hold it with the death drip however I haven't noticed a drop in reception in other places holding it the same way.

i'd make sure your provider has your data switched on... as you probably chaged to a microsim its easy for it to slip through the cracks. i've just come off the phone to vf data support as exact same happened to me. they switched it on, i did a power cycle and bang... 3G

    Thanks 'The Big Gig'.

I'm guessing it's switched on because I did have that short 3G access I referred to, but it's worth a try checking with them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 61 ✭✭pipkato

Had another chat with '3' and data IS switched on.

When I turn off 'Automatic' and check my carriers I can see '3', O2, etc and every now and then '3 (3G)' pops up and disappears. If I select '3 (3G)', it works fine for data, but only for as long as it's available (usually a minute or two at most). So it seems my location in Dublin 6 is a black hole for 3G from '3'.

no..it's protecting the phone...so far I haven't dropped it yet but it's only a matter of time :(

also have the same...even in Limerick city suburbs I had to select the 3g carrier again before it would pick up the signal and then it ran perfectly..
plus 3 is a big black hole out where I live :(
Must call into the shop tomorrow, have them check a few things and get the insurance cover sorted out..

plus...does anyone find the volume on calls extremely low? Even with the case removed it's very hard to heard someone talking and I've exceptional hearing..from what I can see volume is upto the last..
never mind..I'd left the plastic on it till I get the zagg shield and the speaker was covered :)

I'm having similar problems on 3 in Kilcock (North Kildare), periods of 3 (3G) and then just 3. When its on 3 (not 3(3G)) the signal is quiet strong, but no data access.

Rang Three who confirmed that there is no data access unless you are in 3 (3G)..... seems to make the iPhone a bit redundant to me in terms of an always on device.

Three suggested going to Settings > Carrier and manually selecting 3 (3G) rather than Automatic. This doesnt appear to have made any difference as it still switchs between 3 (3G) and 3.

Another thing, once it switchs to 3 the only way I seem able to get back on to 3 (3G) is by manually selecting it in settings, wont do it automatically!

Its not a great first impression of Three!!
Then I do have data access, some websites are blocked!

I'm seriously thinking of excersing my 14 day opt out here. I think Ill give it a few more days, as it might just be network jitters getting used to iphones or something.

But I will be cancelling contract if this continues.

yeah.. the automatic network scanning is a pain..If i was just 3 I'll select the bloody thing..
Reckon Apple might release and update to sort this out..was the 3g/gs the same ?
