I tried ringing apple but unbeknownst to me my warranty has expired so wanted to see could I fix it before using money that was intended for my new iPhone. Any help/advice would be very very very much appreciated.
Right, so yesterday I used a friends o2 dongle and I was asked did I want to save internet settings, I said yes - not knowing what I was saving.
I had to do work at my old college but was unable to connect to wifi. Went to the IT lads and they fixed it - sort of - I could access the Internet but no sites that required a log in eg gmail facebook.
I am now at home and on my iPod typing this as my Mbp won't connect to the Internet! It was connecting to the wifi provider, have full signal but won't load the pages. I know it can't be the wifi as my iPod works fine.
Can anyone help me!?!? At a loss

Okay, so just to clarify, you've connected to your home wireless network, and the Airport menu is showing full signal, but web pages aren't loading. Right?

My first thought is that the IT guys added a proxy setting so that you could connect to the college network. So go to System Prefs > Network > Airport > Advanced > Proxies. If there's any boxes ticked (Web proxy, etc), untick it. Then click OK and try reconnecting to your network.

Let me know if this works.

You are absolutely brilliant, that worked a treat, thank you! very very grateful.
Can i ask, next time i'm on the college what should i do? is there a reason why i was able to, when the IT gang were done with it, use the internet but not log onto gmail, facebook, aib etc etc?

    Again, thank you!

Yeah, the next time you are on the college network you'll have to turn that proxy setting back on, or else web pages won't load. You should make a note of the proxy settings in case you need to re-enter them manually.

To make this switching back and forth easier, you can create two separate network locations: one called "Home" with no proxy setting, and one called "College" with the proxy setting. You can do this now in network preferences. It's probably set to Automatic at the moment, so you'll have to use Edit Location to create two separate locations. Then add the proxy setting to the college one.

This is what I have to do in order to connect to the network in UCD. Then I switch back and forth between my "Home" and "College" location using the Apple menu. It's kinda awkward but there's no other solution that I'm aware of. If I didn't do this I'd have the same problem you had.

I don't know why Gmail, Facebook, etc wasn't working. Is it possible they are blocked by the college?

i've never created two separate networks - if done incorrectly, can i mess up the laptop?

No, not blocked which is why i found so strange. have always been able to use it and friends were able to log on whereas my poor mbp was lagging behind....
    Very strange

No. A network location is just a set of network preferences. You can leave it as it is if you want, but you'll have to go back to proxy settings and re-tick that box the next time you connect to your college network.

How many boxes were ticked btw? Was it just Automatic Proxy Configuration, or were other boxes ticked?

As for Gmail, etc - my best guess is that the IT guys didn't set up the proxy for HTTPS properly. That would prevent you from logging into websites. Have a look on your college website and see if you can find a proper guide for connecting to the network.
