USB hard drive explorer insanely slow

I recently added a usb hard drive which works great, but trying to find stuff on it in windows explorer is insanely slow. Every time i go into a folder then go up a level or back it seems to scan the whole drive again, it doesn't seem to "remember" what files are located on in the drive. Its seriously driving me crazy. I tried turning on indexing but makes no difference.
How to i make windows treat it like the fixed drives in the system?
Running windows 7 32 bit Ultimate with all updates.

Ok i finally fixed this. In case someone else gets this here is the fix that worked for me.
The usb hard drive in my case is full of movie files ..avi, mp4, vob,mkv etc
I right clicked the drive and choose properties.
    Then customize.
Then chose "optimize this folder for videos" and clicked on "apply this template to all subfolders", then clicked the apply button and the result is like night and day. Browsing the drive is just like the fixed drive now, result!
I also changed in the drive properties - advanced - policies changed the drive setting to be optimised for performance and not quick removal which greatly sped up read and write time.

don't forget to safely remove / eject the hard drive befroe you disconnect it as otherwise missed delayed writes may lead corruption

You could also enable write caching (in the drive properties), but as said use the safely remove function to avoid data loss.

Might be worth changing the power management settings to never turn the drive off also, otherwise if its idle for a while and you try to access it you might find explorer freezing for about 5 seconds while the drive spins up.
