Audi A4 TDi - wow economy

Okay, I've have my '04 A4 1.9 TDi 130hp for about a month now, and wow, diesel for the win indefinitely. Coming from a '00 5 Series 2.0 Petrol.

Normally, I put in 50euro and reset all the OBC clocks, just to see what I'm averaging. So, 2 days ago while on the Dublin Quays, I will into the Statoil, 119.9 litre for diesel, so I fill the tank. Took 81euro, and had 20 miles worth of driving fuel left in the tank.

I'm not one for dinging a tank, let me tell you :)

Todays figures are what the car is reading now, which, I think are rather impressive. What do you think?

Miles left with current fuel : 710
    Miles driven : 168
    Average MPG : 51.9
    Average speed : 27mph
    Drive time 5h 58mins

Sorry for the miles, but my car is speedo/odo are still set to miles. My brain still works with miles too, don't think that km/h will catch on at all ;)

I think that a range of 880 miles is a bit too good to be true and I'd say that you'll see it drop as the miles from that tank builds but even if you get 750+ that's still pretty good.

I have the exact same car as you and am very impressed with the economy, although my figures aren't quite as good as yours. I filled up the other day and had a range of 715 on my computer... it's at 270 driven and 395 left now, which I'm pretty happy about. My driving would be pretty mixed and I have a heavy foot so I'm pretty happy with 41-ish mpg.

Most people will get around 40-53mpg out of a 1.9 TDI depending on driving environment and right foot. Interestingly, the mpg with the TDI seems to be independent of the horsepower rating (all other things being equal).

Well, with the fuel I'm burning the car should get lighter, improving economy a bit more. I'll keep you updated for reference. For some reason, the more I drive, the better the economy gets. But not for my wallet though.

I've been doing this with my 2.0 (170PS) A3 for the past four weeks :) I'll update with the figures later but I do know I'm getting 49.2 mpg at the minute and I filled the car on Monday morning and by the end of the day will only have used half of the tank having travelled about 350 miles this week :)

I have a 07 Vectra CDTI 150 and for a €70 fill (fuel light flashing to full to the neck) she'll do 700 to 730 miles. That would be mostly regional road driving.
Having the 6th gear like the 130 A4 makes a massive difference.

Out of a 1.9 tdi passat I can get up to 850 miles from a tank maybe slightly more. But that would be driving easy on good roads. 700-750 would be about normal everyday driving which I'm happy with. Got 65mpg on one trip :-)

    2.0 TDI (170PS) A3, 60 litre fuel tank

    THIS MORNING
Ok, in the 29.6 mile trip this morning I got 53.6 mpg :) taking 36 mins, average speed under 60 mph (can't remember exactly).

    THIS MONTH
Over the last 1099 miles I've gotten 49.6 mpg :)

That 1099 miles cost me £137.81 at £1.18 per litre (Yes, that's £sterling [GBP])

    NOTES
Up until recently I've been spending over £200 a month on fuel...amazing what slowing down can do for you :o

This week I've travelled over 267 miles and used less than half the tank. The trip computer currently indicates that I've over 360 miles of fuel left, meaning that in total I'll get approximately 630 miles out of a 60L fill-up. :)

If you are pulling those readings from the on board computer take them with a big pinch of salt. The only way to calculate mpg is by checking how many miles you got from the tank based on what you've used when you fill up again. They computer is often off by as much as 10%.

Are you sure? That's unbelievable miles from a full tank.I had a 2004 1.9TDI A4 and driving was mainly long distance and the best I could achieve was 650 miles from a full tank.I now have a 2.0TDI Passat and get on average 1,000Km to a full tank of diesel.

When I fill the tank, I FILL the tank! I assume you all know of the we button to press to realise the air in the tank to allow more fuel in? Put it this way, I can put 65 litres in a 60 litre tank. Went on holidays to france last year and I reckon I could have got 900 miles if I didn't have to turn the air con on.

No you can put 65 litres in a tank masquerading as a 60 litre tank.

There is a wee pipe on the left where you put the diesel nozzle in, after you fill the tank hit that button and it realises the air from the tank. As regards putting 65 litres in my car, some of that obviously goes into the filler tube.

All depends on the fill of Diesel aswell.

Went to tesco's a few weeks ago and filled the tank from near empty.... only got 400 Miles out of it with normal driving.

Into Topaz most fills and get 750 - 800 Miles to the tank. Currently sitting at 389Miles done and the needle is slightly above half way on the tank :D

Mark 5 Golf TDi 105 model.

Jaysus do you ever let the turbo spool up?!

Best I got from that engine was 58mpg and it took a lot of effort!
It was in a B5 passat though.

    52mpg was more normal.

Theres been plenty of discussion about it before and many will say its all the same stuff,
but above passat ran crap on tesco diesel with poor economy. I wouldn't go near the
stuff after that with my common rail diesel.

Yes, and it doesnt take much effort to get up to the late 50's for me and the Golf but as you say the Passat is heavier.

A 45 litre "fill" does me about 600 miles typically, or ~60 mpg, about 70:30 urban:long-distance driving.

    Oh, that's a petrol saloon :)

60mpg from a petrol saloon? Is that the new 1.2 octavia or something?? Staggering mpg figure!
