sunday my son says he has a pain in his tooth so i had a lok and i said you need a filling , so he goes to the vhi clinic up in dundrum , as they are open on a sunday , i said i could cost up to 120 euros because its a sunday , back he comes , yeah got it done took about hour and a half,
, later i find the bill he left on the table , they charged

90 euros , just to talk to him ,
40 euros for and exray ,
    300 euros for treatment,

they said he had to come back on wednesday , put not to the same place
    and charge him

    another 250 euros ,

and then said he will have to get a crown fitted in a few weeks with

    another charge of 730 euros

, is this a joke or what over 680 to have what they said was a root canal
i think it time that these professions are made put on display there prices
and 680euros as far as i am cocerned is a rip off , i am nearly sure that a good basic filling would of done , would you thik that if i got a copy of the xray ,{ which has been payed for } could i get a second opinion as to was the root canal necessary
    any comments

A total rip-off no bones about it....If i had to pay 680 euro for treatment, i would just have to suffer because i just wouldn't be able to afford it...

Sounds ok for a root canal depending on the tooth, call out fees on a sunday will be high especially in a private only clinic like swift care, but thats life. If it was an emergency that couldnt wait until monday then most likely a root canal was needed (pain during the night etc) or an extraction.

Prices should always be discussed before treatment, if you are paying you should be there to confirm you can pay the price, no point complaining afterwards.

Are you a dentist? What qualifies you to look at your sons tooth and say ''ah sure a filling will do the job''?

i am not refering to the quality of the work , just the cost , and the fact , if a root canal was necessary i think 90 to talk and then another 40 for xray and 550 euros for the root canal is a a bit steep we are taking about 3 hours work , alot of water will flow under a bridge before i would be paid 680 euros, for 3 hours work , a lot of people dont get this for a weeks work

I understand your anger, but in my opinion the xray is important to show that a root canal is definitely needed and I guess it costs money to have that done.

Root canals are definitely not cheap, maybe you should look into better dental hygiene in the future to prevent something like this.. or have regular checkups to prevent teeth getting that bad.. Just my thoughts on it. I'm not an expert.

I think the €90 you describe as "to talk" included the emergency Sunday call out fee by the dentist, I suspect you would not have had to pay as much on a week day, remember the dentist had to give up a considerable portion of his sunday travelling and treating to remove pain from your son's tooth and even if he didn't have to travel, he is still entitled to be paid more for an "out of hours" service. If your own normal working days are monday to friday, would you not expect your employer to pay you more for working on Sundays?, I think the norm is time and a half or double time.
An x ray is essential for deep cavities as it will show if there is an abcess present, whether the tooth is restorable or whether it should be extracted.

I don't think it's a rip off really. Your son had treatment in a private clinic on a Sunday. It was clearly an emergency which couldn't wait until Monday. In that situation I'd expect to pay a premium for a service.

The amount for root canal was actually quite reasonable. I think I paid about €900 for mine and took about 3 hours. I recall having to pay for xrays at different times with my dentist too.

What age is your son? Is he an adult or a child? Surely one of you asked the questions about root canal before going ahead with the procedure. Did you ask about cost beforehand?

I've also found the VHI clinic in Dundrum to be too expensive and they put me on the wrong antibitotics ccording tot he dental surgeon I eventually went to. But as others have said they are open on a sunday - premium price. Which is fair enough. Still I'd go somewehre else next time - there is a chain that opens on sundays.

    Anyhow, nevermind that.

Can some of you dental types explain to me why an xray costs 40euros ?
I'm not saying it doesn't mind you - I'm just wondering how it costs that much

The equipment costs a lot, the RPII license, RPA costs, the dosimetry costs .You have to store it for all time, data backups, servers, offsite backups developing chemicals (if not digital), wear and tear on the sensors and plates, staff training, IT costs, lead protection costs, mandatory HIQUA audit costs,. Lead shielding in the walls, floors and ceiling.......it aint cheap to have an X-ray in your surgery + the time it take to take and read the X-ray made up of, dentists time, nurses time, reception time, cleaning the surgery before and after, time taken to record the results of the x-ray, equipment wear and tear, insurance, rent, light, heat, electricity and consumables..... all a few cents worth but it adds up.

Lots don't charge separately (myself included) but the examination fee will tend to be a bit higher, but it means I can take X-rays as I need them for diagnosis not if the patient can afford them or not.

Opinionguy, I changed my clinic to digital radiography two years ago, the OPT x-ray machine cost me just shy of €30.000, each intra oral small xray sensor and the software to run it cost €9.000, (I have 3 surgeries), plus I had to update my computers/server so in total I spent almost €63k plus leasing interest over 5 years. I charge €20 for a small x ray and €50 for an OPG so I will have to take about 3000 x rays before it is paid off, and x rays are not something you can take on a whim, there must be a clinical necessity, do you still think they should be cheap?

I didn't say "they should be cheap".
And I think 20EUR and 40EUR is relatively cheap. Thou I much prefer fitzgeme's pricing strategy.
    I was just curious.

just an update , after he had been to the vhi clinic on sunday last he keep the 2nd appointment with the same dentist at their clinic in foxrock on thursday for the rest of the root canal filling paid 200 CASH AND 50 ON HIS LAZER so friday he went away for the weekend ,and just arrived back from cork at 5pm , and said he has been in pain all weekend , now i thought that a root canal removes the nerve so there should be no pain
anyway he has gone back up to the vhi clinic in dundrum to get it fixed
and i said not to hand over any money, i will keep you all posted with the results of this vist when he gets back

he came back from the vhi clinic on monday , and said that he told by the dentist that the first dentist must of gone to far into the tooth and hit the gum and caused a abscess so he gave my son antibiotic for the pain what would you guys do now ,

  • Moderators Posts: 1,589 ✭✭✭Big_G

I would go with him the next time because something is getting lost in translation. The second dentist most likely did not say that about the first dentist, and this is unlikely to be a cause for post operative pain in root canal treatment.

    I'd take the antibiotics?
With root canal, you are trying to remove all bacteria from inside the root and flushing it out with fluids. It's normal for some bacteria to exit through the root tip. A small file is used to ensure the root tip stays "open" during the root canal work.
This small file causes some inflamation around the root tip which will often cause discomfort for a few days after the treatment.
In a healthy person any bacteria around the root tip is quickly overcome, but in some people they can develop a phoneix abcess, where the body over reacts to bacteria at the root tip.
    I wouldn't work on a Sunday.
